Research and Development (R&D) is the centre of all lens design, material and process development within CVI leading to the creation of new product and process opportunities for the business. Development of existing or future products is conducted based on in-house capabilities as well as interfacing with outside suppliers and service providers, academic partners, commercial partners and consultants.
Job summary - What to expect:
We have an exciting permanent opportunity as an Analytical Scientist within our UK R&D Chemistry team. The position involves both hands-on work and participation in multiple project activities liaising closely with other members of the wider R&D group. The Scientist (Analytical) works in a cross-functional team environment involving functions within R&D, Manufacturing, Marketing, and when required, interfaces effectively with outside organizations and individuals.
The focus of this role is the characterisation of extractable constituents by HPLC, GC, LC-MS and GC-MS, which will involve method development and the validation of methods for the analysis of organic and silicone containing materials to support the R&D group. You will be expected to support the analytical team with activities such as equipment qualifications and the maintenance and upkeep of equipment to ensure continued availability. You may also be expected to assist with hazardous waste disposal (as per regulatory requirements and current policies and procedures) in your assigned work area.
- Develop and validate HPLC and GC analytical methods to applicable standards (i.e., ISO17025 or GLP)
- Work on multiple assignments simultaneously.
- Design, develop and implement effective experimental strategies, and execute experiments with minimal supervision.
- Troubleshoot when problems arise.
- Analyze data using statistical techniques, write technical reports and create presentations.
- Keep others informed on project progress and issues.
- Stay informed and educated with technological advances to assist with product development.
- Contribute to continuous improvement in own work area.
- Train more junior team members where appropriate.
- Identify problems and suggest solutions.
- Use an innovative approach to problem solving.
- Work with external partners where needed.

About you:
We are looking for someone who can work effectively in a team environment and demonstrates effective communication skills with internal and external stakeholders. In addition, you will have the following experience:
- Bachelor of Science degree with minimum 3 years' experience in Chemistry or related field or a Master of Science degree with minimum 2 years' experience in Chemistry, or related field or Ph.D. in Chemistry, or related field of study, with no additional experience required.
- Strong knowledge of (Liquid Chromatography and/or Gas Chromatography) method development and validation to applicable standards such as ISO17025 or GLP is essential.
- Experience of GC-Mass Spectrometry and/or LC-Mass Spectrometry preferred.
- Ability to read and understand highly technical material.
- Technical report writing experience.
- Knowledge of silicone chemistry/methacrylate monomers.
- Data analysis and presenting.
- Knowledge of basic statistical techniques.
- Intermediate skill in the use of Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Advanced preferred.
