Want to build a career in specialist engineering?

We’re looking for a mechanically minded individual to join a specialist engineering team in Colchester and train as a Mechanical Governor Technician.

You don’t need previous experience working with governors.

What we do need is someone who enjoys working with their hands, understands how mechanical components work and wants to develop a genuine technical career.

You’ll be trained from the ground up to build, set up, test, calibrate and overhaul mechanical governors used across industrial engines and machinery.

This is a workshop-based role where attention to detail, patience and good mechanical instincts really matter.

What will you be doing?

As you develop your skills, you'll learn to

  • Build and assemble mechanical governor units and sub-assemblies.
  • Set up governors on specialist test equipment and carry out calibration.
  • Complete functional and performance testing against defined specifications.
  • Strip down, inspect and overhaul returned governor units.
  • Clean, measure and assess components for wear, tolerances and suitability for reuse.
  • Follow engineering drawings, work instructions and detailed procedures.
  • Complete accurate build reports, test records and service documentation.
  • Support experienced technicians with more complex builds, investigations and overhaul work.
  • Maintain a safe, organised and high-quality workshop environment.

Don't worry if you haven't done all of this before — the training is there.

What are we looking for?

We’re more interested in your mechanical ability and attitude than whether you've worked on governors before.

You could come from an automotive, plant, marine, agricultural, industrial or general engineering background.

Ideally, you'll have

  • A strong mechanical aptitude and a genuine interest in engineering.
  • Hands-on experience using tools and working with mechanical assemblies.
  • The ability to understand and follow technical instructions.
  • Good attention to detail — particularly when working with precision components.
  • A practical approach to problem solving.
  • The willingness to learn specialist equipment and develop your diagnostic skills.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a small technical team.

Experience in mechanical maintenance, automotive repair, industrial equipment or precision engineering would be useful, but it's not essential.

An engineering qualification or vocational training would also be advantageous.

The training

This is a genuine training and development opportunity.

You'll receive specialist training covering

  • Mechanical governor products.
  • Governor build and assembly procedures.
  • Set-up, calibration and test-bench operation.
  • Mechanical overhaul and reconditioning.
  • Component measurement and tolerance checking.
  • Quality control and technical documentation.
  • Workshop safety and engineering best practice.

You'll be working alongside experienced technicians and progressively taking on more responsibility as your knowledge and confidence develop.

What’s on offer?

  • 5 weeks annual leave + bank holidays
  • 37-hour working week
  • Flexitime
  • Core hours of 08:00–16:45 Monday–Thursday and 08:00–13:00 Friday
  • Competitive salary based on experience and progression
  • Full specialist training
  • Long-term development within a specialist engineering environment

Interested?

If you're mechanically minded, enjoy practical engineering and want to learn a specialist skill that can develop into a long-term career, we'd like to hear from you.

You don't need to be the finished article.

You just need the right mechanical foundation, the right attitude and the desire to learn
