The Equine team provides comprehensive Equestrian & Bloodstock insurance and reinsurance protection for clients worldwide. Convex are unique in the London insurance market in that we have Underwriters who have first-hand practical equine experience. This gives us a profound awareness and understanding of the requirements of this niche sector.

As a Trainee Underwriter, you will support the Equine team and the Underwriting Support Assistant (USA) team in delivering a high-quality client service. You will help ensure that new and renewal business are processed to agreed service standards. You will report directly into the Head of the ELA team and receive daily guidance and mentorship from experienced Underwriters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build good working relationships with underwriting teams and ensure that Underwriting management are regularly communicated with and kept up to date.
  • Support the Underwriting Support Assistant team who will be taking ownership of all aspects of the administration and referrals.
  • Learn and develop an understanding of the Equine line of business including its market and competitor dynamics as well as technical aspects of pricing and insurance terms and conditions.
  • Perform pre-underwriting calculations and work as directed by the Underwriter.
  • Attend peer review meetings and participate in discussions on risks within the division.
  • Ensure peer review packs/meeting preparation is completed and logged on the underwriting system.
  • Produce and collate data for business planning.
  • Manage the flow of bound risks received from the Underwriters.
  • Run Underwriting and MI reports as required.
  • Ensure all processing and credit control queries are answered within SLA timeframes.
  • Liaise with brokers upon request in addition to internal departments such as credit control, claims & compliance.
  • Work in conjunction with the Underwriting teams to ensure efficient working practices are in place such as identifying process improvements, providing feedback to reduce rework or errors and escalate any blockages to the team leader.
  • Maintain awareness of the regulatory impact and ensure all underwriting activity is always within the guidelines.
Skills Knowledge and Expertise
  • A few, probably about 1-2 years of experience in the London market insurance, combined with experience or proven interest in equine or the equestrian world.
  • Studying towards the ACII qualification and committed to developing a career in underwriting.
  • Thrive on building and maintaining working relationships within Convex as well as externally.
  • Excellent numeracy and analytical skills combined with articulate verbal and written communication skills.
  • Naturally curious with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Ability to work flexibly to complete duties of the role, particularly during peak underwriting periods.
  • Highly organised with the ability to prioritise and maintain attention to detail, working with speed and accuracy.
