The Role:
Reporting to the Design Director, the Senior Design Manager is responsible for contributing to the development of major building projects in addition to the overall Pre-Construction process while ensuring procedures and best practices are followed. The Senior Design Manager manages and provides input into the design process with respect to initial strategy and development of the overarching design philosophy while identifying, managing, and mitigating risk; additionally the individual is accountable for ensuring the Consultant team is meeting compliance and contractual obligations. This role will include meeting with the owner and/or other stakeholders to advance the design in compliance with the contract requirements while facilitating meetings with the Consultant team and the owner to guide the process and ensure the company is meeting the clients’ needs and delivering a cost-effective solution. The individual may also be responsible for management of other Design Specialists and Design Coordinators on multiple projects. The Design Manager will also manage the ESDC (Engineering Services During Construction) process during project execution.
As Senior Design Manager you will:
- Ensure that design policies and procedures are followed
- Ensure the team is meeting the compliance and contractual obligations and notify the team of any risks relating to this
- Monitor ongoing design efforts to ensure minimal compliance and most cost-effective design
- Monitor for minimal compliance, including area checks, efficiency of the layout (corridors, electrical), and gross up factors
- Monitor clash-detection processes for design
- Ensure design deliverables are submitted on time
- Meet and ensure the quality of the design documents
- Audit the design documents against the requirements, ensuring they are complete and meet industry quality standards
- Notify the Commercial team of any contract variances to the performance specifications and variances to the original budget
- Lead the Design Management of projects
- Provide support to the Pre-Construction Director, Project Director and the Project Execution team as required
- Ensure the Consultant team is achieving their deliverables on time
Qualifications/Experience:
- Degree in Engineering or Architecture
- LEED, PMP, and P. Eng designations are assets
- 15+ years of construction experience
- Experience with Lean or IPD projects would be an asset
- Experience working within design build procurement methods is preferred
- Proficiency using MS Office Suite and BIM software tools
- Working knowledge of Navisworks (3D and 4D) and REVIT (extract data, open models)
- Experience with ACONEX or Revizto is an asset
