A highly successful civil engineering contractor is seeking an experienced Design Manager to lead and coordinate design delivery across a growing portfolio of infrastructure projects.
The key difference - this business offers genuine flexibility around location and hybrid working, alongside the opportunity to shape design management standards within a respected contractor operating throughout Scotland.
This is an influential role for a Civil Engineer who understands how design decisions affect programme, buildability, cost, risk and successful site delivery. You will work from preconstruction through to construction, managing internal and external design resources while acting as a trusted technical partner to operational teams, clients and supply-chain stakeholders.
Reporting to the Preconstruction Manager, you will take ownership of design activity across tender and live-project stages.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing the design process from preconstruction through construction delivery
- Managing external consultants, designers and technical stakeholders
- Ensuring design programmes, deliverables, budgets and approvals are maintained
- Supporting operational teams with practical, buildable and commercially aware technical solutions
- Identifying and developing value-engineering opportunities during design and construction
- Reviewing complex method statements, temporary works and technical proposals
- Supporting the resolution of design-related defects, compensation events and technical challenges
- Maintaining clear design records, governance and reporting processes
- Providing design fee input and technical support for estimating and bid submissions
What we’re looking for:
You will be a technically credible civil engineering professional who can balance detailed engineering requirements with the realities of construction delivery.
Essential experience includes:
- Strong civil engineering design management experience, potentially with CEng status.
- A background with a civil engineering contractor; candidates whose experience is exclusively consultancy-based are unlikely to be a fit
- Design management experience across preconstruction and construction stages
- Strong exposure to infrastructure projects
- Experience managing external designers, consultants and technical approvals
- Knowledge of permanent works, temporary works, CAD and construction methodologies
Why consider it?
- A senior, visible technical leadership position with real influence over how projects are designed and delivered
- Long-term secure pipeline of work, with a strong history in Scotland
- Broad exposure to preconstruction, live delivery, technical problem-solving and client engagement
- Flexible working arrangements and scope to shape the role around you
This position would suit a Design Manager, Design Engineer, Senior Civil Engineer or Design Lead ready to take ownership of contractor-led design delivery in Scotland.
