Are you one of those rare people who have operational oversight of a project and make the numbers stack up? A highly successful, family-run specialist concrete/civil engineering contractor is looking for a 'Project & Commercial Manager' to take ownership of live projects across Scotland. Working closely with the senior team, you'll blend hands-on operational control with commercial and financial responsibility, making sure each job is delivered safely, on programme – and profitably. This is not a corporate, “one person per task” environment. It will suit someone who enjoys rolling their sleeves up, taking accountability and getting things done in a lean, tight-knit team.
The opportunity
- Take day-to-day responsibility for a portfolio of reinforced concrete / civils packages, from pre-start through to final account.
- Work directly with the directors and regional leads, helping to free them up to focus on strategic growth and key client relationships.
- Lead planning, resourcing and delivery on site while owning the commercial picture: costs, value, change, margin and cash.
- Play a key role as the business continues to grow both its specialist subcontract offering and a selective pipeline of main-contracting projects.
What you'll be doing
- Planning and delivering live projects: programming works, coordinating labour, plant and materials, and ensuring safe, efficient delivery on site.
- Taking full commercial ownership of your jobs: putting together estimates, setting up budgets, tracking costs and value, and managing change.
- Working closely with main contractors and clients across Scotland, building strong relationships and protecting the company's reputation.
- Leading and supporting site teams, ensuring quality, safety and productivity targets are met.
- Preparing and reviewing monthly CVRs, cashflow and forecasts to ensure projects hit or exceed margin expectations.
- Supporting tenders and negotiations for new work, particularly where your operational insight can de-risk delivery and improve profitability.
What we're looking for
- Proven experience in a blended operational / commercial role – e.g. Project Manager, Contracts Manager or Commercially-minded Site/Project Manager – with a civils / concrete / structures background.
- Track record of delivering projects for specialist contractors or mid-sized civils businesses.
- Comfortable both on site and at the laptop: able to read drawings, plan work and lead teams, but also to put estimates together, manage costs and “make money on a job”.
- Strong understanding of construction contracts and commercial mechanisms (variations, compensation events, forecasts, final accounts).
- A “get it done” mindset – happy to muck in where needed, take ownership and work in a lean, no-nonsense culture rather than a large corporate structure.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with site teams, clients, and main contractors.
What's on offer
- A competitive salary in the £65,000 – £80,000 range plus car / allowance and benefits, depending on experience.
- Direct access to decision-makers in a stable, family-run business with a strong reputation in the Scottish civils and energy markets.
- The chance to shape your own role as the business grows.
- Varied projects across Scotland – from infrastructure and energy to complex concrete structures – with a contractor that is selective about the work it takes on.
If you're an operationally strong manager with genuine commercial acumen – and you'd rather have real responsibility in a tight-knit team than be another cog in a major contractor – we'd like to hear from you. Apply in confidence or get in touch for an informal discussion.
