Call for Expressions of Interest from emerging curators with a minimum 2-years’ experience from Africa or of African descent. The Africa Centre Ltd is a registered charity based in the heart of multi-cultural London which exists to educate about, connect to, and advocate for Africa and its diaspora. Since 1964, it has been dedicated to promoting and supporting contemporary Africa and its diaspora through innovation, arts and culture, thought leadership and education.

This year, the Africa Centre has embarked upon a major renovation of its new home in Southwark which in Phase 1 will comprise a restaurant, lounge bar and exhibition space which will be dedicated to showing emerging and established artists from the African Continent and its diaspora. The first major art exhibition scheduled to take place in October/November 2021 in the Africa Centre’s new flagship building will be a solo show of Sungi Mlengeya, an emerging artist based in Kampala. The exhibition will feature 8/9 new works and will be accompanied by a public programme of workshops, talks and discussions using the exhibition’s themes as a starting point.

The successful candidate will be expected, inter alia, to engage closely with the artist, her gallery and the Africa Centre to develop a curatorial approach for the exhibition which best reflects the artist’s practice. They will be responsible for writing the interpretation texts and overseeing the exhibition installation. They will also develop and deliver a public programme to coincide with the artist’s residency and exhibition at the Africa Centre. The curator will assist the Africa Centre in writing the press release and publicising the exhibition, including giving interviews and curator’s tours as required. The successful candidate will be expected to have an established network of contacts in London and be willing to introduce Sungi Mlengeya to artists, collectors, and practitioners to enrich her career trajectory.

A fuller curatorial brief is available on enquiry. This will be a paid position with fees to be discussed and agreed with the Africa Centre with a projected duration period of April – October 2021. Please submit expressions of interest or enquiries to africanart@africacentre.org.uk by Friday 26th of March 2021.
