Contek are working with a client in Birmingham, who havespent decades designing and delivering individual pieces or full ranges of bespoke ironmongery for clients far and wide.

Within their expanding small team, they have completed thousands of projects for clients around the world, from the far east to North America.

Position

Toolmaker Skilled machinist

Working Hours

Mon-Thurs 7.30am-4.00pm, with 30 mins for lunch unpaid. Friday working from 7.30am-1.00pm.

Holidays

25 annual leave days & 8 Bank Holidays (3 annual leave days to be retained and taken during the Christmas closure)

Job Purpose

Using machines available to machine and produce accurate components exactly to specifications provided by line drawings. Ability to produce tooling and jigs for specials and one offs using manual machines such as milling machines and lathes. They must have knowledge of the properties of the material they will be cutting and the capabilities of the tool they will be using/making. This means they must know how much metal can be removed from a particular part using a particular tool in a given amount of time. They must also decide how the piece of material will be held on the machine while it is cut and in what order the cuts will be made. They must also be able to accurately measure the part while it is being made and when it is done to assure it is made to the specified limits of size tolerance. They must work as part of a team, including setting machines for others when required. There would also be working on production specials which no jigs are available for.

Duties

  1. Machine parts to specification using machines such as lathes, milling, drilling machines and grinders.
  2. Set up, adjust, and operate all the basic and specialized machine tools in order for yourself and others to perform precision machining operations.
  3. Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials onto machines.
  4. To work in the specials department, producing one off special components to drawings provided.
  5. Creating tooling for specials
  6. Creating any tools the production line needs e.g. press tools, bending tools, drilling jigs, assembly jigs
  7. Creating welding jigs for specials
  8. Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
  9. Check work pieces to ensure that they are properly lubricated or cooled.
  10. Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and determine need for adjustment or repair.
  11. Design fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special engineering needs.
  12. To check that all details on all route cards are correct and notify the office of any changes.
  13. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all relevant co-workers, whilst maintaining the highest level of professional conduct.
  14. Learning to set and operate the bending and drifting machines.
  15. To make suggestions to improve the procedures of the company, particularly as affects the Manufacturing function.
  16. To work in an efficient manner with minimum supervision but to refer to a manager or director when their assistance or guidance will promote customer service or efficiencies.
  17. To comply with all Health & Safety rules in place and work in a safe manner at all times with due regard to the safety of yourself, your colleagues and visitors. To report to a manager or director any breaches of Health & Safety rules that may occur.
  18. Stocktaking as required by manager.
  19. At the end of every operation clean down machine and work area ready for next production operation.
  20. Working in wrap and pack department when required.
  21. Carry out other duties which may be required by the company from time to time.
