Welding & Fabrication Charge hand (Hands-On)

Location: Skelmersdale, Lancashire

Salary: £40,000 - £45,000

Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

Working Hours:

  • Monday - Thursday: 8:00am - 4:30pm
  • Friday: 8:00am - 3:30pm

Overtime Opportunities:

  • Typically 1 hour before and/or after standard working hours
  • Saturday mornings when required

This is a hands-on charge hand role, ideal for someone who enjoys leading from the front while remaining actively involved in welding and fabrication work, while also taking responsibility for essential workshop documentation.

The Role:

As Welding & Fabrication Supervisor/Chargehand, you will oversee day-to-day workshop operations, working hands-on on the shop floor while ensuring work is completed safely, on time, and to a high standard. You will also be responsible for maintaining accurate workshop documentation and records.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and coordinate welding and fabrication activities within the workshop
  • Remain hands-on with welding and fabrication work as required
  • Ensure quality standards are met across all fabricated components
  • Lead, mentor, and support welders and fabricators
  • Plan daily workloads, job priorities, and resource allocation
  • Ensure compliance with health & safety and company procedures
  • Carry out and record dimensional surveys and basic quality checks
  • Check and approve timesheets for accuracy and hours worked
  • Complete and review delivery notes and associated job paperwork
  • Liaise with engineering, quality, and management teams to resolve issues

Candidate Requirements:

  • Proven experience in a welding/fabrication supervisory or senior role
  • Strong hands-on welding background (MIG/TIG experience preferred)
  • Experience working with mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminium
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication and engineering drawings
  • Comfortable completing workshop documentation and basic reporting
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills
