CNC Machinist Senior (Hands-On)
Location: Skelmersdale, Lancashire
Salary: £40,000 £45,000
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Working Hours
Monday Thursday: 8:00am 4:30pm
Friday: 8:00am 3:30pm

Contek Recruitment are currently working with a well-established precision engineering company who are looking to recruit an experienced Senior CNC Machinist to join their growing team.
This is a hands-on senior / chargehand-level role, ideal for someone with strong CNC machining expertise who enjoys leading by example on the shop floor, remaining actively involved in programming, setting, and operating, while also taking responsibility for job ownership and essential workshop documentation.

Our client is a highly respected precision engineering business with over 50 years experience manufacturing high-integrity machined components and fabrications for demanding industries including offshore, subsea, and nuclear sectors, supplying customers across the UK and internationally.
The Role
As Senior CNC Machinist (Mills & Lathes), you will play a key role in the day-to-day running of the machining function, working hands-on at the machine while providing technical oversight and support across jobs.
You will operate at a senior technical level, acting as a point of reference within the workshop, ensuring components are produced safely, efficiently, and to exacting quality standards. This role does not require formal people management but does involve ownership, coordination, and influence on the shop floor.
Key Responsibilities

Act as a senior technical point of reference for CNC machining activities

Hands-on programming, setting, and operating of CNC machines

Programming primarily at the machine using Fanuc controls

Setting and operating 3-axis CNC milling machines and 2-axis CNC lathes

Manufacture precision components to tight tolerances

Interpret and work from detailed engineering drawings

Ensure parts meet quality, specification, and customer requirements

Carry out in-process inspection and record dimensional checks

Support daily job priorities, sequencing, and workflow

Complete and maintain accurate job cards and workshop documentation

Ensure compliance with health & safety and company procedures

Liaise with engineering, quality, and production teams to resolve technical issues
Candidate Requirements

Proven experience in a senior or highly skilled CNC Machinist role

Strong background in CNC programming, setting, and operating

Experience with Fanuc-controlled CNC Mills and Lathes

Competent on 3-axis mills and 2-axis lathes

Experience machining a range of materials (including steels and alloys)

Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings

Comfortable completing inspection records and workshop documentation

Strong technical judgement, organisation, and communication skills

Experience working in regulated or high-integrity sectors (offshore, subsea, nuclear) advantageous
