Contek are working with a client in Birmingham who manufacture and supply bespoke products to the finest quality in design and craftsmanship. Through growth, they are looking for someone who wants to learn, develop and progress within their small team. Ideally, we are looking for someone who understands machining and has spent a few years as an apprentice or similar on a shop floor who would like the opportunity to progress.

Job Purpose

Using our two CNCs and other machines available to machine and produce accurate components exactly to specifications provided by line drawings with precision engineering. They must have knowledge of the properties of the material they will be cutting and the capabilities of the tools, drills and tips they will be using. To also use the automatic saws to cut jobs ready for the CNC and other production maintaining the offcuts and cutting into relevant billet sizes to maximise our material usage and not scrap. To assist with incoming material loading.

Duties

  • Setting up and adjusting our two CNC machines with the correct holders, drills and tips related to the job and included in the programme whether it be carbide or high-speed steel - in order for yourself to perform precision machining operations.
  • Operating both our CNC machines according to established procedures to produce high-quality, tight-tolerance components.
  • Performing meticulous inspections and measurements on finished parts to guarantee their accuracy and quality.
  • Conducting routine machine maintenance and assisting in troubleshooting while upholding a safe and organised workshop environment.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials onto machines.
  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
  • Check work pieces to ensure that they are properly lubricated or cooled.
  • Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and determine need for adjustment or repair.
  • Learning to programme the CNCs from drawings.
  • To check that all details on all route cards are correct and notify the office of any changes.
  • To use the saws to cut up jobs for the CNC.
  • Manage the scrap and cut into relevant billets for production.
  • Scheduling and forward planning to group jobs together to reduce set up time whilst also focusing on working to required dates on route cards.
  • Preparation of future jobs - do we have the holders and tips needed for the next job?
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all relevant co-workers, whilst maintaining the highest level of professional conduct.
  • To make suggestions to improve the procedures of the company, particularly as affects the Manufacturing function.
  • To listen to advice given to them.
  • To work in an efficient manner with minimum supervision but to refer to a manager or director when their assistance or guidance will promote customer service or efficiencies.
  • To comply with all Health & Safety rules in place and work in a safe manner at all times with due regard to the safety of yourself, your colleagues and visitors.
  • To report to a manager or director any breaches of Health & Safety rules that may occur.
  • Stocktaking as required by manager.
  • At the end of every operation clean down machine and work area ready for next production operation.
  • Working in wrap and pack department when required.
  • Carry out other duties which may be required by the company from time to time.

What Will Success Look Like In 6 Months?

  • Full understanding of all targets set.
  • Solid understanding of quality standards.
  • Set and operate the Cutex CNC lathe.
  • Set and operate the saws to cut material up for CNCs and production.
  • Maintain the offcuts into correct sizes for production.

What Will Success Look Like In 12 Months?

  • Working with minimised guidance.
  • Ability to plan the sequence of jobs independently on the Cutex CNC.
  • Independently set and operate all jobs on the Cutex CNC.
  • Minor program adjustments on the Cutex CNC to suit the job.
  • Started training on setting and operating the BNA CNC (more complex).
  • Independently running the saws and staying on top of offcuts.
