Mechanical Fitter / Commercial Body Builder

Location: Cam, Dursley, Gloucestershire, GL11 Salary: Up to £37,440 per year (£37,000 advertised salary) Job Type: Full-time, Permanent Hours: 45 hours per week

About the Role

Our client is looking for an experienced Mechanical Fitter to join their busy workshop in Cam, Gloucestershire.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled mechanical fitter with experience working on HGVs, heavy vehicles or specialist vehicles.

The successful candidate will be responsible for stripping, inspecting, rebuilding and fitting mechanical assemblies, while supporting vehicle conversions, refurbishments and fleet maintenance projects.

You will work as part of a skilled workshop team, alongside hydraulic engineers and fabricators, with opportunities to develop your technical skills through training and hands-on experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strip, inspect, rebuild and install mechanical assemblies, including vehicle bodies, binlifts and chassis.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and carry out repairs and preventative maintenance to HGV standards.
  • Work with hydraulic and pneumatic systems alongside the hydraulic engineering team.
  • Work with fabricators to repair and modify bodies, binlifts and chassis.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Carry out alignment and tolerance checks.
  • Operate lifting equipment safely and in accordance with PUWER, LOLER and site health and safety procedures.
  • Complete job cards and maintenance records accurately.
  • Assist with quality assurance checks prior to vehicle handover.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping, safety and workshop practice.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience working with HGV hydraulic systems.
  • Vehicle diagnostic experience.
  • Welding or mechanical assembly experience.
  • Level 3 apprenticeship background.
  • Experience working on specialist vehicles, refuse vehicles or vehicle conversions.
