Are you an experienced indirect tax specialist considering an international career move? Looking for an opportunity to take on a senior leadership role while enjoying the lifestyle New Zealand has to offer?
We are partnering with one of the Big Four accounting firms in New Zealand to recruit an experienced Indirect Tax Director to join its growing Tax Advisory practice in Auckland.
This is an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished indirect tax professional to leverage their technical expertise in an international market, advise some of New Zealand's leading organisations, and play an influential role in shaping and expanding a specialist indirect tax advisory practice.
Importantly, previous New Zealand indirect tax experience is not essential. Strong indirect tax advisory experience is highly relevant and will be considered.
This is a permanent full time opportunity based in Auckland, New Zealand
The Opportunity
As an Indirect Tax Director, you will lead complex indirect tax advisory engagements, providing strategic and commercially focused advice to a diverse portfolio of major corporate clients.
You will work alongside highly experienced tax professionals across New Zealand and the firm's international network, taking ownership of sophisticated transactions, developing senior client relationships, and contributing to the continued growth of the practice.
This is a predominantly advisory-focused position, with an emphasis on complex indirect tax matters and transactions rather than routine compliance.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Leading complex indirect tax advisory engagements and delivering commercially practical advice to major corporate clients.
- Advising on cross-border transactions, property transactions, financial arrangements, business sales, and corporate restructures.
- Providing specialist technical expertise on indirect tax reviews, risk management, and transactional matters.
- Developing and maintaining strong relationships with senior stakeholders and key clients.
- Identifying business development opportunities and contributing to the strategic expansion of the indirect tax advisory practice.
- Collaborating with international tax specialists on cross-border engagements and complex indirect tax matters.
- Contributing to significant indirect tax policy developments and legislative reform initiatives.
- Providing technical leadership and mentoring to the wider advisory team.
About You
We are particularly interested in speaking with experienced indirect tax professionals who are open to relocating to New Zealand.
The ideal candidate will bring:
- Significant experience advising on complex indirect tax matters, ideally gained within a Big Four firm, leading professional services practice, tax authority, law firm, or senior in-house tax position.
- Strong technical expertise in indirect tax legislation, particularly in relation to complex commercial transactions and advisory work.
- Proven experience managing senior client relationships and delivering high-value advisory engagements.
- Strong commercial acumen, leadership capability, and an interest in business development.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A relevant bachelor's degree and, where applicable, a professional accounting or legal qualification.
- Experience in international or cross-border indirect tax matters would be advantageous.
