A well-established civil engineering and utilities contractor is looking to appoint an experienced Temporary Works Designer to support the delivery of temporary works design across a range of civil engineering projects. The successful candidate will work closely with project teams, designers and subcontractors throughout the design and construction phases, ensuring temporary works are safe, suitable, technically compliant and aligned with project objectives. This is a key technical role with responsibility for the design, coordination and assurance of temporary works, with particular focus on constructability, sequencing, compliance and safe delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake the design and coordination of temporary works and associated civil engineering designs.
- Support projects from initial feasibility and design assessment through to installation and final removal.
- Prepare in-house temporary works designs where required.
- Produce and review reports, calculations and drawings to a high technical standard.
- Ensure designs are compliant with client requirements, national standards, British Standards, Eurocodes and relevant technical guidance.
- Promote a safety by design approach across all temporary works activity.
- Check third-party temporary works designs and calculations.
- Undertake technical assurance reviews and provide design approval where required.
- Advise on constructability, sequencing and practical delivery of civil and temporary works designs.
- Identify competent designers and contractors for temporary works installation.
- Coordinate and supervise the design input of subcontractors and specialist designers.
- Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations and all relevant legal and regulatory requirements.
- Work closely with wider design and project teams to support effective collaboration.
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers and design team members.
- Support the development of policies, procedures, design tools and technical processes.
- Assist with team objectives, design strategy and continuous improvement.
Experience Required
- Degree-level qualification or equivalent experience in civil engineering, structural engineering or geotechnical engineering.
- Proven experience in temporary works design within a civil engineering environment.
- Experience designing and checking temporary works for civil engineering projects.
- Strong understanding of civil engineering design, temporary works processes and technical assurance.
- Experience supervising subcontractors, sub-consultants or specialist designers.
- Ability to produce and review calculations, drawings and technical documentation.
- Strong working knowledge of CDM Regulations and relevant design standards.
- IT literate, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and CAD.
- Chartered Engineer status with ICE or IStructE would be preferred, although strong relevant experience will also be considered.
The ideal candidate will be a technically capable Temporary Works Designer with strong civil engineering knowledge and a practical understanding of how designs are delivered on site. They will be confident checking designs, advising project teams, managing design risk and supporting safe, efficient project delivery.
