Head of Finance

An established and growing roofing contractor based in Merseyside is looking to appoint an experienced Head of Finance to take ownership of the company's financial function and play a key role in supporting its continued growth.

This is a hands‑on senior finance position, ideally suited to someone who enjoys working closely with business owners and operational teams and who can combine strong financial control with commercial insight.

You will be responsible for overseeing the day‑to‑day finance function, ensuring accurate and timely reporting, maintaining robust financial controls and providing clear information to support strategic decision‑making.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee the company's finance function.
• Prepare accurate monthly management accounts, financial reports and forecasts.
• Manage cash flow, working capital and financial planning.
• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and credit control.
• Monitor project and contract profitability, costs and margins.
• Support budgeting, forecasting and long‑term financial planning.
• Provide commercial analysis and insight to the Directors and senior management team.
• Ensure robust financial controls and processes are in place.
• Manage relationships with external accountants, auditors, banks and other financial stakeholders.
• Ensure compliance with relevant tax, VAT and statutory requirements.
• Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, systems and reporting.
• Provide financial oversight of contracts and projects, highlighting risks and opportunities.
• Lead, develop and support members of the finance team as the business grows.

About You

We are looking for a commercially minded finance professional with strong technical knowledge and the confidence to operate at senior level within an SME environment.

You will ideally have:

• Proven experience in a senior finance, financial controller or Head of Finance position.
• Strong management accounting and financial reporting experience.
• Excellent understanding of cash flow, budgeting and forecasting.
• Experience working within construction, contracting, property, engineering or another project‑based environment would be advantageous.
• Strong commercial awareness and an ability to understand project profitability and operational performance.
• Excellent attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
• The ability to communicate financial information clearly to non‑financial colleagues.
• A proactive, hands‑on approach and the confidence to challenge where necessary.
• Experience of improving processes, systems and financial controls.
• Relevant accounting qualifications (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) would be desirable, although relevant experience will also be considered.
