Our client is a multi-disciplined construction company based in the Northwest. They operate across a range of sectors nationwide, including:

Due to a busy work stream they are looking for an Estimator to join their team in Merseyside. Their projects range from £100k to £6mil.

Job Purpose

To prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates for construction, refurbishment, and maintenance projects, ensuring tenders are commercially viable and aligned with company objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review drawings, specifications, and tender documents to understand project requirements
  • Carry out quantity take-offs and prepare detailed cost estimates
  • Obtain and evaluate quotations from suppliers and subcontractors
  • Prepare and submit tender documents within deadlines
  • Identify project risks and include appropriate contingencies
  • Liaise with project managers, clients, and commercial teams
  • Assist in value engineering to optimise cost without compromising quality
  • Maintain and update cost databases and historical records
  • Support handover of successful bids to the delivery team

Role-Specific Duties

Construction (New Build):

  • Develop cost plans from early design through to final tender
  • Interpret architectural and engineering drawings
  • Conduct site visits to assess existing conditions
  • Account for unknowns and potential variations

Maintenance:

  • Price works using schedules of rates
  • Handle reactive and planned maintenance estimates efficiently

Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong numerical and analytical skills
  • Good understanding of construction methods and materials
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Commercial awareness and negotiation skills
  • Proficient in estimating software and Microsoft Excel
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple tenders under tight deadlines

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience in construction estimating (new build, refurb, or maintenance)
  • Knowledge of UK construction practices and contracts
  • Degree or HNC/HND in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or similar
  • Membership or working towards membership with Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) or Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)
  • Experience with estimating software (e.g. CostX, ConQuest, or similar)
