A well-established civil engineering and utilities contractor is looking to appoint an experienced Drainage Design Engineer to support the continued growth of its in-house design capability. This is a key technical role within the design team, focused on the delivery of drainage infrastructure across utilities, highways and wider civil engineering projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading drainage designs from concept through to detailed design and construction, while also supporting the development of junior engineers, graduates and technicians. The role would suit someone with strong technical drainage design experience, good client-facing skills and the ability to manage design delivery to programme and budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design of drainage infrastructure from concept through to detailed design and construction.
- Deliver drainage designs as standalone projects or as part of larger multi-disciplinary schemes.
- Oversee and review drainage designs, models, calculations and drawings.
- Provide technical assurance across drainage design work.
- Promote the use of digital design solutions, including integration within a BIM environment.
- Allocate drainage design tasks and manage delivery against programme and budget.
- Support the technical development of engineers, graduates and technicians.
- Manage stakeholder relationships throughout the drainage design and consents process.
- Provide technical input into bids, quality submissions, drainage strategies and fee proposals.
- Ensure all work is delivered in line with quality, safety and environmental procedures.
- Take a design lead role on projects where required.
- Support staff development through mentoring, training and on-the-job guidance.
Experience Required
- Strong background in drainage design within civil engineering, utilities, highways or infrastructure.
- Proven experience leading drainage designs from early-stage concept through to construction.
- Experience producing and reviewing calculations, models, drawings and technical documentation.
- Ability to manage design delivery to programme and budget.
- Strong understanding of relevant drainage design standards and technical requirements.
- Experience working in a multi-disciplinary design environment.
- Confident managing internal teams, external stakeholders and client relationships.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to mentor junior members of the design team.
