An established civil engineering and groundworks contractor is looking to appoint an Estimator to join its North West team, based from its Warrington office. The business works as a subcontractor to major and regional housebuilders, delivering packages across groundworks, civil engineering, foundations, drainage, external works and residential infrastructure. This is a strong opportunity for an Estimator with groundworks or civils experience to join a well-established contractor with a growing regional presence and a strong pipeline of residential development work. The role would suit someone who is commercially minded, detail-focused and comfortable reviewing drawings, tender information, specifications and subcontractor/supplier pricing to produce accurate and competitive tenders.

The Role

As Estimator, you will be responsible for preparing accurate and commercially competitive tenders for residential groundworks and civil engineering projects. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Reviewing tender enquiries, drawings, specifications and bills of quantities
  • Preparing accurate cost estimates for groundworks and civil engineering packages
  • Measuring and taking off quantities from drawings and tender information
  • Pricing works including earthworks, drainage, foundations, roads, sewers, external works and associated infrastructure
  • Liaising with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive quotations
  • Assessing project risks, opportunities, exclusions and clarifications
  • Working closely with Commercial, Pre-Construction and Operational teams throughout the tender process
  • Supporting tender submissions and ensuring deadlines are met
  • Reviewing site constraints, abnormal costs and buildability considerations
  • Maintaining accurate records of costs, rates, assumptions and tender information

The Candidate

The successful candidate will ideally have experience within a groundworks, civil engineering, residential infrastructure or housebuilding-related environment. You may currently be working as an Estimator, Assistant Estimator, Quantity Surveyor, Assistant Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Assistant with exposure to pricing, take-offs, tendering or cost planning. Groundworks experience would be highly beneficial, particularly across:

  • Roads and sewers
  • Drainage
  • Earthworks
  • Foundations
  • Retaining structures
  • External works
  • Residential infrastructure
  • Section 278 / Section 38 works
  • Utilities and service installations

Key Requirements

  • Previous experience in estimating, quantity surveying or commercial support within construction
  • Ideally a background in groundworks, civils, infrastructure or residential development
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications and tender documents
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills
  • Good attention to detail and commercial awareness
  • Confident communication skills when dealing with internal teams, suppliers and subcontractors
  • Ability to manage deadlines and work across multiple tenders
  • Experience with estimating software, take-off tools or Excel would be advantageous
