Role and Responsibilities

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Area Operations Manager to join our operations team. The team typically operates embedded power projects comprising reciprocating gas engines or battery storage plants between 2-10 MWe at 11kV grid level, with a number of larger plants between 20-50 MWe at 33kV, 66kV and 132kV grid level. Reporting to the Head of Operations, this role is responsible for all operation and maintenance activities across the area. The region is organised into three Areas, each managed by an Area Manager, with a number of sites and a team of engineers.

  • Carry out all duties with health and safety as the number one priority, including personal and team H&S responsibilities.
  • Ensure plant and equipment are run efficiently and safely as scheduled, operating and maintaining flexible power generation equipment and carrying out necessary repairs.
  • Lead and develop a team of Operations Engineers; train, coach and mentor staff; ensure compliance with health and safety responsibilities.
  • Optimise plant availability and uptime across the area; provide site support for complex maintenance tasks and unplanned outages.
  • Report on status of area equipment, maintain plant records and spare parts using designated IT systems.
  • Identify and resolve problems; escalate safety observations, near misses, NCRs and technical issues as needed.
  • Monitor performance against budgets and KPIs; implement remedial action plans with cost/time analysis as required.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders; assist in selecting and managing external contractors and suppliers.
  • Provide maintenance services to external customers as required; support handover of newly built sites from Construction to Operations.
  • Adhere to all Company Policies & Procedures, including H&S, Environmental Management Systems and financial systems.

Apart from the duties summarised, the company reserves the right to include other reasonable duties as part of this work.

Key Skills and Experience

  • Good engineering experience, ideally with gas engines from leading OEMs; ability to create urgency and ownership within the team.
  • Self-starting, well organised; able to perform hands-on maintenance and manage admin/paperwork.
  • Experience managing supply chains for engine parts and services; able to communicate engineering issues to senior management.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Knowledge

  • Essential: Detailed understanding of MWM, MTU, Jenbacher or Caterpillar gas engine management and control systems and operation/maintenance of such plants.
  • Desirable: Experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS); knowledge of three-phase electrical systems.

Skills

  • Essential: Good written and numerical skills, IT literate, ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Desirable: Working knowledge of CMMS systems.

Experience

  • Essential: Detailed experience of Internal Combustion Engines, base-load power generation plant and equipment; leadership and strong teamwork.
  • Desirable: Experience operating Battery Energy Storage Systems; data and analytics in an engineering maintenance backdrop.

Qualifications

  • Essential: Educated to at least ONC level or equivalent, or qualified by experience in Plant Engineering or relevant discipline.
  • Desirable: CITB Competence Scheme Card; IOSH Working Safely.
