Location: Alton, Hampshire (Regular travel to Group depots required)

Hours: 7:30am – 5:00pm, Monday to Friday

Salary: £32,000 – £35,000 (dependent on experience)

The Role

We are seeking a practical, hands-on Health & Safety Assistant to support our expanding engineering group across various operational sites. Based primarily at our Alton headquarters, this role involves regular travel to other Group depots. This position offers an excellent opportunity for career development within a structured and growing Health & Safety function. You will provide vital operational health and safety support within manufacturing, workshop, and yard environments, working closely with local managers to ensure sites remain safe, compliant, and well managed. Flexibility in managing your time will be essential, with allocation based on operational demand and risk profiles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular inspections across Group depots and operational sites
  • Identify hazards and agree corrective actions with local management teams
  • Maintain a visible Health & Safety presence within workshops and yards
  • Support operational changes from a safety perspective
  • Deliver site inductions as required
  • Facilitate toolbox talks addressing incidents, trends, or seasonal risks
  • Investigate accidents and near-miss events promptly
  • Identify immediate and root causes
  • Develop proportionate corrective and preventative actions
  • Escalate significant incidents to the Health & Safety Manager
  • Review and update Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work
  • Support COSHH assessments and documentation updates
  • Ensure Health & Safety documentation is clearly understood and effectively implemented
  • Assist with preparation for ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 audits
  • Support internal audits and collate evidence
  • Track and assist with closure of inspection and audit actions

About You

  • NEBOSH General Certificate (or willingness to work towards it)
  • Experience within manufacturing, engineering, construction, or industrial environments preferred
  • Confident in conducting inspections and investigations independently
  • Practical and pragmatic approach to risk management
  • Excellent communication skills across all organisational levels
  • Full UK driving licence (essential due to travel requirements)
