About the Role

Connex Education Partnership is looking for Functional Skills Teachers to work across specialist SEND schools and provisions in Weston-Super-Mare and the surrounding areas.

This role is ideal for a teacher who can make English and Maths relevant, practical and accessible for pupils with additional needs.

You’ll help young people develop the literacy and numeracy skills they need for everyday life, further education, employment and greater independence, while adapting learning to suit individual abilities.

Functional Skills learning may include:

  • Practical English and communication
  • Reading, writing and comprehension
  • Speaking and listening
  • Everyday Maths and problem-solving
  • Money, budgeting and financial awareness
  • Time, measurement and using numbers
  • Applying literacy and numeracy to real-life situations
  • Employability and workplace skills
  • Preparing for qualifications and future pathways

The Pupils

You may teach pupils with a range of learning, communication, sensory, behavioural and emotional needs, including:

Autism / ASC | SLD | PMLD | SEMH | ADHD | Communication needs | Complex SEND

Pupils may have very different starting points, so lessons should be appropriately differentiated, practical and focused on achievable progress.

Your Role

  • Plan and deliver engaging Functional Skills lessons
  • Adapt learning to individual abilities and starting points
  • Make English and Maths relevant to everyday life
  • Use practical activities and real-world examples
  • Support pupils working towards Functional Skills qualifications where appropriate
  • Build confidence and encourage participation
  • Monitor progress and adapt teaching accordingly
  • Work alongside Teaching Assistants and specialist staff
  • Support pupils with preparation for adulthood and future pathways

What We’re Looking For

  • QTS is essential
  • Experience teaching English, Maths or Functional Skills
  • SEND teaching experience is desirable
  • Ability to differentiate for a wide range of abilities
  • Strong classroom management and communication skills
  • A practical and engaging teaching style
  • Commitment to helping pupils achieve meaningful progress

Experience in specialist SEND schools, alternative provision, FE or vocational education would be advantageous.
