Connex Education is recruiting reliable and proactive individuals to work as Trainee School Caretakers / Site Assistants in primary and secondary schools across Swindon. This is an excellent opportunity for people with handyman skills, maintenance experience, keyholding responsibilities, facilities experience, or anyone who enjoys practical work and is looking to start a career within school site management. These roles are offered initially on a temporary basis, with many leading to permanent contracts for the right candidates.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Opening and securing school buildings each day.
- Carrying out basic maintenance, repairs, and general DIY tasks.
- Ensuring the school site is clean, safe, secure, and well maintained.
- Conducting routine health and safety checks around the premises.
- Setting up classrooms, halls, and outdoor areas for school events and activities.
- Reporting maintenance issues and liaising with contractors where required.
- Assisting with deliveries and moving furniture or equipment safely.
- Supporting the school in maintaining a welcoming environment for pupils, staff, and visitors.

About You
- Practical and confident carrying out basic DIY or maintenance tasks.
- Reliable, trustworthy, and happy to take responsibility for opening and securing buildings.
- Comfortable working independently and managing your own workload.
- Organised with a proactive approach to solving problems.
- Friendly, approachable, and able to build positive relationships with school staff.
- Physically able to carry out manual handling duties where required.
- Willing to work early morning shifts, typically starting between 6:00am and 7:00am, Monday to Friday.
- Holders of a full UK driving licence with access to a vehicle (desirable but not essential).
Previous experience in maintenance, caretaking, facilities management, property services, construction, warehousing, retail keyholding, security, estates, or general handyman work would be advantageous but is not essential.
