About the Role

Connex Education are recruiting for an experienced Specialist SEN Teacher to join a welcoming specialist school in Newark, supporting pupils across a mixed age and ability range.

This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate and resilient teacher with strong experience working within a specialist SEND environment. The successful candidate will be confident supporting pupils with a range of complex needs and, importantly, will have proven experience managing and responding to challenging behaviour in a calm, consistent and positive way.

You will be responsible for planning and delivering engaging, highly differentiated learning that reflects the individual needs, abilities and starting points of the pupils within your class. The school takes a highly personalised approach to learning, with pupils accessing different curriculum pathways according to their individual needs and levels of development.

You will work closely with Teaching Assistants, specialist staff and other professionals to create a safe, structured and nurturing environment where pupils are supported to develop academically, socially and emotionally.

The successful candidate will be someone who can build trusting relationships, remain calm and consistent in challenging situations, and adapt their teaching to ensure all pupils are able to engage and make progress.

Role Responsibilities

• Planning and delivering engaging, differentiated lessons for pupils with a wide range of SEND.
• Teaching within a mixed age and ability class, adapting learning to meet individual starting points and needs.
• Supporting pupils with complex learning needs, including autism, communication and interaction needs and learning difficulties.
• Managing and responding appropriately to challenging behaviour, using positive, consistent and individualised approaches.
• Creating a calm, safe and structured learning environment.
• Developing positive and trusting relationships with pupils, including those who may present with significant behavioural or communication needs.
• Using a range of communication strategies and adapted resources to support pupil engagement and understanding.
• Working closely with Teaching Assistants and other professionals to ensure consistent support and provision.
• Setting appropriate learning and development targets and monitoring pupil progress.
• Supporting pupils to develop communication, independence, confidence and resilience.
• Incorporating practical, sensory and life-skills activities into learning where appropriate.
• Supporting pupils to develop skills that will help them prepare for future education, adulthood and greater independence.
• Working in partnership with colleagues and families to support individual pupil needs and outcomes.
• Maintaining high expectations while recognising and celebrating individual progress.

About the School

This specialist SEND school provides education for pupils aged 3–18, with a broad range of complex special educational needs and disabilities. The provision supports pupils with needs including autism, speech, language and communication needs, moderate learning difficulties and profound and multiple learning difficulties.

The school takes a highly personalised approach to education, with pupils accessing different curriculum pathways depending on their individual needs and abilities. Provision includes Early Years, pre-formal, informal, semi-formal, formal and Post-16 pathways.

There is a strong focus on helping pupils develop communication, independence, confidence and resilience, alongside their academic development. The curriculum also places significant emphasis on preparing pupils for adulthood, including independent living, personal safety, community participation, emotional understanding and future careers

The school uses individualised approaches to behaviour, recognising that behaviour and communication are closely linked. Staff are expected to understand the reasons behind individual behaviours, use structured and predictable approaches, and support pupils to develop more effective ways of communicating their needs.

The setting offers specialist facilities and resources designed to support pupils with complex needs, including sensory and life-skills provision. Person Specification

To be considered for this role, candidates must have/be able to demonstrate:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), evidenced by providing your Teacher Reference Number.
• Previous experience working as a teacher within a specialist SEN/SEND setting.
• Proven experience supporting pupils with challenging behaviour and complex additional needs.
• Experience planning and delivering highly differentiated lessons for pupils with varying abilities and starting points.
• The ability to remain calm, patient and consistent when responding to challenging situations.
• Strong behaviour management skills and an understanding of positive, individualised approaches to behaviour.
• Experience supporting pupils with communication and/or learning difficulties would be highly advantageous.
• A genuine passion for improving outcomes for children and young people with SEND.
• The ability to work collaboratively with Teaching Assistants, specialist staff and other professionals.
• A flexible and creative approach to teaching and learning.
• A full enhanced DBS certificate, or willingness to obtain one.
• Completion of the Connex Education onboarding process.
• A minimum of two school-based references.
• The right to work in the UK.
