Connex Education is working with a network of specialist SEND schools and alternative provisions across Bristol, seeking confident and dedicated Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) to support pupils with a wide range of additional needs.

Whether you’re looking for flexible day-to-day supply or a longer-term placement, this is a fantastic opportunity to make a lasting impact while enjoying the variety that supply work offers.

As an HLTA, you’ll play a key role in supporting teaching and learning across the school, delivering planned learning activities, leading small groups and, where required, covering whole classes under the guidance of qualified teachers.

About the Role

As a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, you will

  • Deliver high-quality learning activities to individuals, small groups and whole classes under the direction of teaching staff.
  • Plan, prepare and adapt learning resources to meet the diverse needs of pupils with SEND.
  • Assess, monitor, record and report on pupil progress, helping to inform future learning.
  • Support pupils with a range of needs, including autism, SEMH, communication difficulties and moderate learning difficulties.
  • Promote independence, confidence and positive behaviour through consistent, nurturing support.
  • Lead interventions that develop pupils’ academic, social and emotional skills.
  • Take responsibility for agreed areas of learning and contribute to wider school improvement initiatives.
  • In some placements, support the development of enterprise, independence and life skills programmes, helping prepare pupils for adulthood.
  • Provide guidance and support to Teaching Assistants where required, helping to share best practice and maintain high standards across the classroom.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, families and other professionals to achieve the best outcomes for pupils.

About You

We’re looking for candidates who

  • Hold HLTA status or have significant experience working at HLTA level.
  • Have experience supporting children or young people with SEND in either specialist or mainstream settings.
  • Are confident leading learning independently and covering classes when required.
  • Have strong behaviour management and communication skills.
  • Can adapt learning to meet a wide range of individual needs.
  • Are organised, proactive and committed to delivering outstanding support for pupils.
  • Have a passion for helping children develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed both in school and beyond.
