Salary: £20 – £25 per hour (depending on experience)

Job Type: Flexible (Part-time / Full-time), Monday–Friday

Are you passionate about supporting children and young people with additional needs through personalised learning and communication support? Connex Education is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Makaton Tutor to provide 1:1 support for pupils with Special Educational Needs, including Autism, SEMH needs, communication difficulties, and pupils with EHCPs currently out of education. This rewarding role focuses on building communication, engagement, confidence, and independence through tailored teaching approaches including Makaton, PECS, and sensory-based learning.

The Role

  • Deliver engaging 1:1 tuition sessions in the home or community setting
  • Support pupils with a range of complex SEND needs
  • Use Makaton and PECS to support communication and engagement
  • Deliver sensory play and sensory-based learning activities
  • Adapt sessions to meet the individual needs and learning styles of each pupil
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils and families
  • Provide regular session feedback and progress updates

Requirements

  • Must hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Experience working with children with SEN is essential
  • Experience using:
    • Makaton
    • PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System)
    • Sensory play and sensory-based learning
  • Strong behaviour management and communication skills
  • A patient, nurturing, and adaptable approach to teaching
  • Willingness to obtain an enhanced DBS if you do not already have one registered on the update service
  • Able to provide a minimum of 2 references, including your most recent employer
