The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is currently accepting applications for one (1) full‑time Supervising Developmental Services Worker 1 position located in Norwich, CT. This position is critical to ensuring the health and safety of individuals supported within the program, as it provides supervision and leadership to lower‑level direct support staff as well as overall residential program coordination.

Position Highlights

  • Must be a current Department of Developmental Services employee.
  • Location: Norwich, CT
  • Full‑time | 1st shift Schedule: Friday 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Saturday 7:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Tuesday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Wednesday 2:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., Thursday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Regular days off: Sunday, Monday (flexibility required)

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and supervise or assist in supervision of a residential living program including assigning work and evaluating staff performance.
  • Assist in development of policies, programs and operational procedures.
  • Direct implementation of policies, programs and procedures in accordance with state and federal regulations and needs of individuals.
  • Arrange for fire drills and safety inspections.
  • Supervise staff by directing and advising them on work, reviewing reports and conferring with them on daily operational, disciplinary and special programs.
  • Arrange for and coordinate provision of appropriate supportive care services such as housekeeping, dietary, maintenance and laundry.
  • Secure and distribute supplies and equipment for teaching strategies and individuals’ personal needs.
  • Arrange for individual transportation.
  • Monitor individual fund spending.
  • Assist in unit response to surveys and inspections.
  • Coordinate, evaluate and may participate in residential care program within unit (care, feeding, clothing and treatment of individuals).
  • Provide orientation and in‑service training to subordinate staff.
  • Complete and review reports, notes, logs and requisitions for accuracy.
  • Design and write residential living programs.
  • Attend interdisciplinary team and administrative meetings.
  • Coordinate community support services for individuals.
  • Administer first aid in emergency situations.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • One (1) year of experience working with individuals with an intellectual disability or other developmental disabilities at the level of a Developmental Services Worker 2.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel.
  • Experience communicating, interacting with, and explaining information to internal partners, external partners, and the public in a professional capacity.
  • Experience identifying community resources for individuals with disabilities.
  • Experience assisting individuals to develop life skills.
  • Experience effectively developing plans to prioritize work and assignments.
  • Experience with oral and written communication with internal and external stakeholders, including guardians, doctors, teams and external programmes.
  • Experience supervising staff in supportive roles.

Special Requirements

  • May be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
  • May be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.
  • May be required to travel.

Physical Requirements

Must possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties; a physical examination may be required.

Working Conditions

  • May be required to lift and restrain individuals.
  • May have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive and/or abusive individuals.
  • May be exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions.
