The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) invites its experienced agency employees to apply for the position of Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Highway Maintenance) located within District 1 Maintenance Garages.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

  • Monday - Friday
  • Full Time, 40 hours per week
  • First Shift, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM
  • Location: District 1 Maintenance Garages (East Windsor, Windsor, Vernon, Willington, East Hartford, Bolton, Southington, Meriden, Glastonbury, Middletown, Wethersfield, and Farmington)
  • This is an on-site position

THE ROLE

This position is responsible for overseeing and assigning daily duties to a crew of various Transportation Maintainers in the overall repair and maintenance operations of various statewide roadways and highways.

REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must indicate they hold a current and valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tank endorsement in the 'Licenses and Professional Certifications' section of the application, or they will not be considered. Candidates invited to interview will be required to produce a copy of their current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B, reflecting the tank endorsement, a valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC), and copies of their last two performance appraisals at the time of interview, or they will be immediately disqualified.

Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever their services are needed; to include mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30. Various storm events will require employees to stay at work for the duration of the storm, which at times could be up to a period of several days, to include holidays and weekends. Incumbents in this class will be required to have a 20-mile residency from the assigned garage.

SELECTION PLAN

In order to be considered for this job opening you must be a current State of CT employee of the agency listed above for at least six (6) months of full-time service or full-time equivalent service, absent any applicable collective bargaining language, and meet the Minimum Qualifications as listed on the job opening. You must specify your qualifications on your application.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of skilled experience in the maintenance and repair of highways. NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Transportation Maintainer 2.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in an acting capacity VIP experience as an inspector
  • Experience setting up work zones and sign patterns on both multilane and secondary roadways
  • Experience with Crash unit operations
  • Experience reporting policy and procedures incidents

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class will be required to accept assignment to emergency duties including snow and ice removal as required. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

At State Airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class are exposed to extremes of weather conditions, to frequent lifting of heavy weights, to highly dangerous road and traffic conditions, including exposure to heights when working on bridges, to poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants during summer months, and to loud and potentially dangerous machinery.
