The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) is now accepting applications from qualified DOT employees to apply for the position of Transportation General Supervisor (Maintenance) role in District 1.
Position Highlights
- Monday‑Friday, full‑time (40 hours/week), 7:30 am‑4:00 pm
The Role
This position is responsible for overseeing a Highway Maintenance garage of various levels of Transportation Maintainers and Transportation Maintenance Crew Leaders, in the repair and maintenance operations of various statewide roadways and highways. This position will cover the duties of the Transportation Maintenance Manager as required.
Requirements
- Current and valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tank endorsement.
- Valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) at the time of interview.
- Willingness to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, and mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30, and to stay at work during storm events.
- Must provide copies of CDL, MEC, last two performance appraisals, and Master Application at interview.
- Must meet required knowledge and experience as specified in application.

Selection Plan
In order to be considered for this job opening you must be a current State of CT employee of the agency listed above for at least six (6) months of full‑time service or full‑time equivalent service and meet the Minimum Qualifications listed on the job opening.
Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)
In the Department of Transportation and the Connecticut Airport Authority this class is accountable for supervising Transportation Maintenance Crew Leaders and Transportation Supervisors and their crews in the maintenance and betterment of transportation facilities.
Examples of Duties
- Coordinate crews on maintenance, special maintenance, and capital outlay work.
- Allocate personnel and equipment.
- Determine and report on materials required.
- Direct establishment of lines and grades from stakes set by the engineers.
- Arrange for equipment through the Transportation Maintenance Manager.
- Advise, direct, and coordinate work during winter storms.
- Arrange for shifting of equipment when there are breakdowns.
- Arrange for required repairs to equipment through garage supervisors.
- Schedule, assign, oversee, and review the work of staff.
- Provide staff training and assistance.
- Conduct performance evaluations.
- Determine priorities and plan crew work.
- Establish and maintain crew procedures.
- Develop or make recommendations on the development of policies and standards.
- Act as liaison with other units, agencies, and outside officials regarding policies and procedures.
- Prepare reports and correspondence.
- Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skill and Ability
- Knowledge of approved methods of maintaining and improving roads, including winter road maintenance and related drainage structures and snow and ice control and removal.
- Knowledge of materials and equipment used in road maintenance and construction.
- Knowledge of agency policies, procedures, state and federal laws, statutes, and regulations.
- Knowledge of first aid.
- Considerable interpersonal skills.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to lay out, supervise, and inspect highway maintenance work.
- Ability to utilize computer software.
- Supervisory ability.
Minimum Qualifications – General Experience
Six (6) years of experience in highway maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience
Three (3) years of the General Experience must have been in a supervisory capacity. For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Highway Maintenance) or Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Tree Maintenance).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in Highway Maintenance Operations.
- Experience leading and providing direction to a work crew.
- Experience in an acting capacity as a Transportation General Supervisor (Maintenance).
- Working knowledge in Microsoft Computer Applications (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
- VIP experience.
Special Requirements
Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties. A physical examination may be required.

Physical Requirements
Incumbents must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such fitness to perform the duties. A physical examination may be required.
Working Conditions
Incumbents may be exposed to extremes of weather conditions, lifting heavy weights, dangerous road and traffic conditions, exposure to heights when working on bridges, poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants during summer months, and loud and potentially dangerous machinery.
