Overview

The Know Your Neighbourhood Project (KYN) is to promote community support and accessibility for people who have a learning disability. We are looking for 1 person with learning disabilities to become a Peer Support Worker for the Know Your Neighbourhood project in South Tyneside. Hours: 1 day (7.5 hours) per week. The job will last until 31st March 2026.

What you will do

  • You and your team will help local people who have a learning disability, and autistic people.
  • You and your team will be helping people who have asked for some help.
  • Asking Them About What Help They Need: Helping them to think about their hopes and dreams.
  • Helping them to think what they are good at.
  • Helping them to find out what can help them to have a good life.
  • Helping them to make a plan.
  • Helping them to try new activities and visit new places in South Tyneside.
  • Helping people to set up peer support groups or activities.
  • Delivering training and workshops with the community Connectors to help people learn new skills and information.
  • Helping people to have their voice heard about things that are important to them.

What kind of person we are looking for

  • You must have personal experience of having a learning disability or being autistic.
  • You must be interested in helping people to have a better life.
  • You must be good at listening.
  • You must be able to talk to lots of different people.
  • You must be able to think of good ideas about how people can live a happy and healthy life, making the most of where they live.
  • You will understand how to work with people and see the things they are good at.
  • You must believe in equal opportunities for everyone.
  • You can travel around South Tyneside and get to the places we run drop ins.
  • You can have support if you need it.
  • You will be good at working with others.
  • You live in South Tyneside or know South Tyneside well.

It Would Be Good If

  • You know how to use a phone, computer or both.
  • You can travel around Gateshead and know the area.
  • You know how to use social media, WhatsApp, Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
  • We can give you support with IT.
