A well-established, family-owned business in the grounds maintenance and landscaping sector is looking for an Office Manager to take ownership of the operational and administrative backbone of the company. Founded over 40 years ago and still family-run, the business has grown steadily into a multi-million-pound operation and works with a client base that includes major national property portfolios and blue-chip head office sites. This is a genuinely broad, senior support role reporting directly into the two managing directors, not a narrow admin function.
The business operates across two connected sides, grounds maintenance and landscape contracting, and equipment sales, with around 50 staff in total, including a substantial field-based workforce and a small workshop team.
The role
This is a hands-on, high-trust position at the centre of the business. You will manage payroll preparation, HR processes, and the general administrative function, while acting as the operational glue between the two directors, the head of operations, the accounts function, and the wider admin team. You will have oversight of several direct and indirect reports across both divisions and will be expected to represent the directors in day-to-day operational matters.
The directors need someone who can absorb problems and bring them solutions, not the other way round. You will be trusted to make calls, manage difficult situations including staffing issues, and keep things moving without needing everything escalated back up. Comfort operating in a busy, blue-collar, trade-heavy environment matters here as much as your admin and HR credentials.
What you'll bring
- Solid experience in a senior office management, EA, or operations support role, ideally within a business with a field-based or trade workforce
- Working knowledge of payroll processes and core HR administration
- A genuinely organised, structured approach, someone who can take a project and deliver it in stages rather than trying to do everything at once
- Confidence managing people issues directly and professionally, including difficult conversations
- The ability to work closely with senior leadership without needing constant direction
- A calm, solutions-first mindset under pressure
What's on offer
- Competitive Salary, with flexibility for the right candidate
- A senior, trusted role with real scope and autonomy
- A stable, long-established, growing business with clear leadership and a strong reputation in its sector
This is a great opportunity to join a business at a genuinely senior level, working closely with ownership, with real influence over how the operation runs day to day. To find out more in complete confidence, get in touch.
