Are you a creative and innovative thinker with a passion for people and an enthusiasm for waste and the environment? If so, you are just what we are looking for! An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Waste Prevention and Recycling Officer to join our Service Development Team.
The Service
The Service Development Team are responsible for developing and implementing improvement and behaviour change initiatives within the waste service by:
- Developing effective systems, policies, procedures and strategies to provide efficiency and clarity in service delivery
- Developing and implementing a programme of waste prevention campaigns based on national best practice, working closely with stakeholders, communities and the volunteer network
The role
As one of two Waste Prevention and Recycling Officers, you will lead on the design, development and implementation of targeted waste prevention and recycling initiatives, to reduce the amount of municipal waste produced across North Yorkshire. You will specifically be covering the Harrogate, Craven and Selby localities. You will also:
- Work closely with the council’s Communications Team to change public attitudes and behaviour to waste and recycling
- Maximise opportunities for awareness raising through the organisation of and attendance at relevant events
- Engage with the community and voluntary sector to develop partnerships and build community capacity
- Lead on the local delivery of national waste prevention and awareness campaigns
- Identify opportunities to seek external funding for initiatives and projects
- Work with the Waste Operations teams to identify priority areas for engagement e.g. low participation / high contamination
- Support ‘efficient and effective’ service delivery
What you will bring
Working closely with local communities and other stakeholders you will be an excellent communicator with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with a range of different people. You will be someone who uses creativity and innovation to develop and deliver successful waste prevention and recycling initiatives to a range of audiences and have the ability to motivate, influence and promote waste minimisation through face-to-face engagement, talking to individuals and groups at public events. You will have demonstrable knowledge and experience of implementing behaviour change initiatives aimed at influencing attitudes and behaviours, preferably within an environmental area. As well as waste prevention or communications and marketing knowledge you will be up to date with current waste legislation.
