Civil engineering is a profession that deals with the planning, design, development, and management of engineering projects in a wide variety of disciplines covering both the physical and natural environment. As a Civil Engineer, you will improve and protect the environment in which we live, and it is a career where you can really make a difference.
A degree Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering with Durham County Council gives you the opportunity to work across our Transport Services, within Strategic Traffic Management. You will work alongside a diverse and highly skilled team that looks after approximately 4,800km of highway, 22,360 road markings, 4,000km of footways, 69 sets of traffic signals, 73 pedestrian crossings, 12,500 bollards, and 63,300 unlit signs that allow our residents and visitors to go about their business.
Your day-to-day duties include supporting Technical Officers in assessing the requirements for new roads and associated infrastructure, working alongside Technicians and Engineers to review and produce technical drawings to specified standards, and supporting the team with calculations, research, and data collections. You will also have the opportunity to get involved in various projects. We will support you as you train towards a Degree in Civil Engineering, gaining the necessary knowledge and experience to become a qualified Civil Engineer yourself.

What qualification will I gain? As part of your apprenticeship, you will study towards a Level 6 Civil Engineering Degree. You can choose to study with either Northumbria University or Teesside University.
What will I need? You must have Level 3 qualifications meeting 112 UCAS points, one of which must be Mathematics at Grade B and another analytical science subject (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Physics or Technology), or recognised equivalents, or an equivalent qualification e.g. A Levels and BTEC extended diplomas. You should have good communication skills, and the ability to problem solve and make decisions. Please use the ‘Person Specification’ section of your application form to demonstrate that you have the essential and where possible, desirable experience, skills, and knowledge. Candidates who do not evidence that they meet the essential qualifications and experience listed on the person specification will not be short-listed.
