An excellent opportunity has arisen to join Westmorland and Furness Council's Planning Policy Technical Services Team as a Technical Services Officer, helping to shape the future growth, development, and sustainability of our area. The Technical Services Team provides essential and varied administrative and technical support to the Planning Policy Team enabling the delivery of the Local Plan. The role is offered on a fixed term basis of 12 months to specifically support the Council's delivery of its Digital Planning programme.

You will work closely with officers within the team and other council services, to audit and upload key GIS datasets to the national planning data platform, starting with Listed Buildings, Conservation Areas, Article 4 directions and Tree Preservation Orders. You'll play a key role in delivering high‐quality technical and administrative support, handling a complex range of work including data and systems management, GIS and mapping, and processing of information. This is a rewarding role for someone who enjoys attention to detail and accurate data management. Who we are looking for...

We're seeking a highly organised and proactive individual with experience in technical or administrative support and systems. A good understanding of GIS datasets and systems, ideally with experience in QGIS or other mapping software, is essential.

  • GCSEs or equivalent qualifications (including English and Maths); further training or education in planning support, geography, or business administration is desirable.
  • Strong technical and administrative skills, with experience of handling complex datasets and mapping of Planning data.
  • Proficiency in using IT systems and databases to manage information accurately and efficiently.
  • A good understanding of digital planning, or a willingness to develop this knowledge.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills, with the ability to provide clear advice and support to colleagues and customers.
  • The ability to work independently, prioritise workloads, and maintain attention to detail while meeting deadlines.
