An exciting opportunity has arisen for three enthusiastic and capable Multi Skilled Operatives to join our Highways Operations Team that forms part of the Highway Network Management based at Tadman Street, Wakefield. These are career graded positions that offer an excellent opportunity for those people who have the potential to be developed into appropriately skilled and valuable employees.

Career grades allow employees to progress through several incremental pay grades while they are undertaking further training, demonstrating increased levels of competence and taking on more responsible duties as they progress on a defined career path. The successful candidates' starting salary will be determined by their skills and qualifications they already possess that are in line with the job specification.

There will be opportunities to earn extra money by taking part in a Winter Maintenance Standby Rota/Gritter Driving requiring a LGV licence; otherwise, training will be offered to enable this.

What will be expected from me?

The individual will undertake as part of a team, or as an individual, maintenance and construction of roads, footways, verges, street furniture and highways drainage. They will also help ensure the service culture of performance, safety and quality is embedded within the service.

What I might be doing?

  • This is a customer-focused service, so personal conduct is key, as is good levels of communication.
  • Completion of all works within the required timescales.
  • Works completed in an effective manner that minimises disruption to all road users within the district.
  • Work is carried out safely.
  • Work is carried out to specification.

Essential requirements:

  • Multi Skilled Operative - Level 1 of 4
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills
  • Level 1 qualification in Construction or similar in a relevant subject or relevant experience in a similar type of work.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of small tools and equipment, also learn/train and demonstrate their effective use in practice.
  • Willing to obtain a class B/C1 driving licence.
  • Willing to learn basic LANTRA – Temporary Traffic Management training course.
  • Able to read maps.
  • Able to read and understand Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work.
  • Able to work as part of a team and learn effective communication skills.

Multi Skilled Operative - Level 2 of 4 (Including the above essentials):

  • NVQ Level 2 in Construction Operations or similar in a relevant subject or relevant experience in highway maintenance/construction.
  • Current driving licence class B/C1.
  • Willing to learn how to drive/operate Large Goods Vehicle Class 2 (Class C) or learn operating larger machinery such as JCB3cx Backhoe + attachments or train to NVQ Level 3 standards – Advanced craft certificate in Roadworks.
  • Competent operating a wide range of small plant and equipment.
  • Able to read and understand technical drawings.
  • Willing to learn LANTRA Awards Traffic Management: 12D Rural and Urban Roads T1/T2 static works.
  • Willing to learn City and Guilds - New Roads and Street Works Act - Operative (NRASWA).

Multi Skilled Operative – Level 3 of 4 (Including the above essentials):

  • Large Goods Vehicle Class 1 (CE or C with exemption 102 drawbar) or Class 2 (Class C).
  • Competent in operating with ease and at reasonable speed a wide range of larger machinery including JCB3cx Backhoe including attachments or NVQ Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Craft in Roadworks.
  • Extensive relevant experience in a wide range of extensive skills such as spazzling large areas or the ability to construct long lengths/large areas of kerbing/flagging/block paving (daily outputs) to precise line and levels at speed.
  • Competent in basic Masonry skills.
  • City and Guilds - New Roads and Street Works Act - Operative (NRASWA) in relevant subject or considerable experience in Highway Maintenance and construction works at an appropriate level.
  • LANTRA Awards Traffic Management: 12D Rural and Urban Roads T1/T2 static.
  • Willing to work towards achieving LANTRA Awards Traffic Management: T5 Multi-phased Traffic Signals.
  • Where there is an expectation to gain Driver Certificate of Professional Competency once in role.
  • Where there is an expectation to gain City and Guilds 6159 in Winter Maintenance.

Multi Skilled Operative – Level 4 of 4 (Including the above essentials):

  • Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) Class 1 (CE) along with a broad range of highway maintenance skills including ability to spazzle large areas to precise line and levels at speed or LGV Class 2 (C) along with one of the following:
  • NVQ Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Craft in Roadworks.
  • Extensive skills in Spazzling large areas and ability to set precise line/levels and construct long lengths/large areas of kerbing/flagging/block paving (daily outputs) to precise line and levels at speed.
  • Competent in operating with ease and at reasonable speed a wide range of larger machinery including JCB3cx Backhoe including attachments.
  • LANTRA Awards Traffic Management: T5 Multi-phased Traffic Signals.

  • This is a full-time post of 37 hours per week.
  • Holidays will be dependent on grade.
