We are excited to offer two Consultant in Public Health opportunities; one based within Durham County Council's dynamic public health team, and another focused on healthcare public health, hosted by Durham and seconded to South Tyneside Council.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a forward-thinking public health team in County Durham. We are appointing a full-time equivalent post (available as full-time, part-time or job share) for a Consultant in Public Health or Consultant in Public Health Medicine.

What is involved?

You will join the Public Health team and lead key priorities to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of the people of County Durham and reduce health inequalities. This is a senior appointment within the Council. You will be responsible for delivering the Council’s statutory duties, shaping and commissioning significant strategic programmes across the life course, and providing strategic leadership to key staff while overseeing a designated portfolio area agreed after appointment. You will manage a dedicated team, demonstrate strong leadership and change-management skills, and work with partners at a senior level across the health and social care system.

Your role will support the improvement of health outcomes in Durham, including the development and delivery of the Public Health Vision and Strategic Plan for Durham County Council and the priorities in the Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy. The public health strategic plan has recently been refreshed, and you will play a key role in leading major change programmes. The appointment provides an excellent opportunity to work in a strong, supportive team, shape the development of new programmes of work with local partners, and collaborate closely across the Council, local health and care system, Foundation Trusts, Integrated Care Board, Durham University, and the voluntary and community sector.

What is involved?

This senior Consultant role plays a pivotal part in strengthening Healthcare Public Health across one of the most ambitious and collaborative health systems in the country. Working across local government, the NHS, regional partners and the Integrated Care Board, you will champion evidence, ethics and value to ensure healthcare decisions deliver the greatest population benefit. You will drive large-scale system improvement, support better health outcomes, and help reduce long-standing inequalities by ensuring prevention, evidence and population value are at the heart of clinical strategy and commissioning.

The role offers a unique opportunity to influence major system priorities; from long-term conditions to ethical decision making and strategic investment, and to shape a consistent, high-quality regional approach to Healthcare Public Health. You will also contribute to the development and growth of the wider public health workforce, supporting collective learning, capability and innovation across the region.

We are seeking a strategic, collaborative and values-driven leader with deep public health expertise, strong analytical insight and the ability to build trusted relationships across complex systems. The role will act on behalf of the Association of Directors of Public Health North East and 11 local authorities who co-fund the role. Durham County Council is the lead employer, but the role will liaise with key organisations in the region and be accountable to the authorities who fund the arrangement. Day-to-day supervision and line management will be provided by the Director of Public Health for South Tyneside.

What will I need?

Applicants will be expected to be included in the GMC Specialist Register, GDC Specialist List or UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists. Please refer to the attached Person Specification for the full criteria.
