Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Sheffield

  • Flexible start and finish times
  • Hybrid working available, typically up to 2 days from home where project work allows
  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays, pension scheme and a supportive team that shares ideas

Join a growing engineering team designing special purpose lifting machinery and kinetic systems. This is work on real moving kit, not just big static structures. Think mechanisms and motion, with structural elements where they earn their keep. You’ll be designing the clever assemblies that bring a machine to life.

What you’ll be doing

  • Own mechanical design from concept to commissioning for equipment with moving parts
  • Create clean 3D models and 2D drawings for mechanisms, sub-assemblies and parts
  • Specify actuators, gearboxes, bearings, guides and safety features that suit the duty
  • Balance bespoke design with smart use of COTS components to hit cost and lead times
  • Run hand calcs and basic FEA where useful, with an eye on dynamic loads, wear and fatigue
  • Produce risk assessments, design calculations and technical files for UKCA and CE
  • Support build, FAT and SAT, and work with EC&I to integrate motion and controls
  • Get hands on with prototypes, testing, root cause and continuous improvement

What you’ll bring

  • Solid mechanical design experience in machinery, automation or kinetic systems
  • Confident CAD user, comfortable with tolerancing, fits and manufacturability
  • Working knowledge of standards and safety for machinery design, including PUWER and ISO 12100
  • Practical understanding of mechanisms, alignment and serviceability
  • Clear communicator who can juggle multiple priorities without dropping the ball

Nice to have

  • Experience with lifting or handling equipment, LOLER awareness
  • Exposure to FEA for mechanisms and fatigue
  • Background in regulated sectors such as nuclear, defence, pharma or large venues
