About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Principal Transport Planner to join our Streetscene team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a leading role in shaping transport strategy, delivering sustainable transport initiatives, and improving the public realm across the borough. As a senior leader within the service, you will manage a team of transport professionals, lead the delivery of complex transport planning projects, and provide expert advice to senior stakeholders, councillors, developers, residents, and partner organisations. You will contribute to strategic policy development, champion innovation, and help ensure transport schemes deliver positive outcomes for local communities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a high-performing Transport Planning team, providing effective leadership, coaching, and performance management.
- Oversee the development and delivery of transport planning projects, policies, and programmes.
- Act as a senior technical specialist and represent the Council on transport and traffic management matters.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including developers, consultants, residents, community groups, and elected members.
- Ensure transport planning activities comply with relevant legislation, guidance, and Council policies.
- Manage project budgets and resources to deliver value for money and successful outcomes.
- Procure and manage consultants and specialist contractors where required.
- Contribute to strategic corporate and cross-directorate initiatives that support the Council's wider objectives.
- Deputise for the Sustainable Transport and Engagement Manager when required.
About You
We are looking for a confident and experienced transport planning professional who can combine technical expertise with strong leadership and stakeholder management skills. You will have:
- Significant post-qualification experience in transport planning across a range of work areas.
- Experience managing complex transport projects from conception through to implementation.
- Previous experience supervising, developing, and motivating staff.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences.
- Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Experience working with stakeholders and negotiating successful outcomes on complex projects.
- Knowledge of transport planning, traffic management, relevant legislation, policy frameworks, and current urban transport issues.
- Experience managing budgets, consultants, and external contractors.
- A qualification in Transportation Planning or a related discipline that supports membership of a recognised professional body.
