About the Role

We are seeking a Driver Supervisor to join Dorset Council's Transport Service based at the Old Radio Station Depot in Dorchester. This temporary position is due to commence in October and is offered on a 37-hour per week basis, working a shift pattern between 7:00am and 5:00pm, Monday to Friday. This is a key operational role responsible for supporting the day-to-day running of the transport fleet, supervising drivers across the county, and ensuring services are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with Council policies and procedures. Managing and supporting a team of approximately 65 home-to-school and adult day centre drivers, you will act as the main point of contact for operational queries, coordinate fleet and staffing resources, and provide front-of-house support at the depot. While primarily office and depot based, there may be occasional requirements to move vehicles or undertake driving duties where service needs require.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and support drivers, ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of transport services.
  • Act as the main point of contact for operational queries and coordinate driver and vehicle availability.
  • Monitor compliance with transport policies, health & safety, and driving regulations.
  • Maintain fleet records, process driver timesheets, and report vehicle defects.
  • Coordinate responses to breakdowns, staffing issues, and service disruptions.
  • Support driver inductions, training, and development.
  • Build positive relationships with colleagues, contractors, and service users.
  • Assist with depot operations and occasional driving duties when required.

Skills & Experience

  • Experience supervising or coordinating teams, ideally within transport, logistics, or fleet operations.
  • Strong organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing operational demands.
  • Experience completing administrative tasks and maintaining accurate records.
  • Knowledge of health & safety within an operational environment.
  • Full UK driving licence (essential).
  • D1 licence and minibus experience (desirable).
