We’re looking for an experienced Technical Manager to support the delivery of complex multi-utility projects. As Technical Manager you will be responsible for managing technical activities within the project lifecycle, coordinating design development, ensuring compliance with GIRS, WIRS and NERS standards, and supporting operational delivery through robust technical governance. Acting as the key technical interface within the project team, the role supports Project Managers, Design Teams and commercial colleagues to ensure projects are technically sound, buildable and aligned to client expectations.
Responsibilities- Technically manage a portfolio of multi-utility projects, ensuring smooth progression from feasibility through design and into delivery.
- Coordinate and monitor the production of gas, water and electrical designs, ensuring timely completion and compliance with client specifications and industry standards.
- Ensure all technical outputs comply with GIRS, WIRS, NERS, CDM requirements and relevant legislation, codes of practice and company procedures.
- Provide ongoing technical support and guidance to Project Managers and site teams, assisting with engineering challenges, buildability issues and technical queries.
- Act as the primary technical point of contact for clients, utility companies and statutory stakeholders, maintaining clear communication and progress updates.
- Liaise with designers, network operators and adoption bodies to secure approvals, manage comments and progress technical submissions.
- Support effective technical handovers between design, delivery and commissioning stages to enable autonomous and efficient project execution.
- Manage work and that of direct reports to ensure deliverables are completed efficiently and to a compliant industry standard.
- Work closely with Quantity Surveyors and commercial teams to assess technical implications of scope changes, variations and compensation events.
- Provide technical input into estimating, feasibility reviews and value engineering for complex or non-standard schemes.
- Maintain accurate technical records and documentation, ensuring audit readiness and compliance with internal and external requirements.
- Support audits, including LRQA and client audits, within area of technical expertise when required.
- Support continuous improvement by feeding lessons learned into design, standards and procedures.
- Maintain professional competence through awareness of regulatory updates, industry best practice and ongoing professional development.
- Strong experience within a multi-utility, DNO, ICP or IDNO environment.
- Working knowledge of GIRS, WIRS and NERS standards and associated approval processes.
- Solid understanding of utility network design, construction sequencing and adoption requirements.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications and regulatory documentation.
- Strong coordination, communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Sound commercial awareness with the ability to assess technical impact on cost and programme.
- Good organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
- Confident problem-solver with a practical, solutions-focused approach.
- Commitment to health, safety, quality and environmental best practice.
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience within the utilities or infrastructure sector.
- Working knowledge of CDM Regulations and utility regulatory frameworks.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Professional registration (IEng or working towards IEng/CEng) is desirable.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Salesforce or similar systems is advantageous.
- SMSTS, First Aid or EUSR certification is desirable but not essential.
