Assist with planning and co-ordination of overall technical design and engineering implementation of project work. Responsible for assignments of a complex nature requiring comprehensive knowledge and skills. Can also plan, organize and carry out engineering effort in assigned area including determination of new techniques to be used. Independently carry out advanced engineering studies.
Responsibilities:
- Technical: Interpret and apply industry standards and codes (ASME B31.4/B31.8, BS PD 8010, IGEM/TD/1, API 5L, API 6D) affecting design work and project deliverables. Apply methods of design, fabrication and construction. This will include: pipeline material, wall thickness selection, valve specification and location and use of temporary / permanent pigging facilities, etc. Produce complex deliverables and documents. For instance: scope descriptions; study reports; design criteria; detailed pipeline stress analysis modelling; supporting documentation; hazard analyses and risk assessments. Check pipeline drawings for compliance with basis of design and code requirement. This will include: overall route map; alignment sheets / strip maps; crossing drawings; and typical construction drawings. Familiarity with pipeline routing work and associated software (ArcGIS etc.). Coordinates constructability and design reviews of AGI 3D models, etc. Undertake vendor review and pre-qualification, bid evaluations including commercial and technical clarifications, participate in vendor meetings and help in contracting strategy and Pipeline package deliverables. Interface with other discipline staff as required. Ensure pipeline discipline work performed is carried out in accordance with our group’s ISO 9001 Accreted Quality System, including ISO 14001 Environmental Procedures and ISO 18001 Health and Safety Procedures.
- Generic: Supervise design work to ensure statutory, company, client and project requirements are met for integrity, effectiveness, safety and robustness. Organise and prioritise discipline work tasks for self and team to ensure maximum efficiency and performance. Work across geographic areas, and coordinate interface between company and third party design centres. Maintain a strong awareness of project CTRs and time spent developing, checking, approving and revising project deliverables. Work to improve efficiency and effectiveness of design process. Provide a consultative role to internal and external clients. Lead technical discussions with third parties (customer, suppliers, and regulators), other discipline staff and client engineers. Promote implementation of Penspen design standards and work practice. Liaise with clients, as requested, on a technical level to ensure their needs are met. Assist Business Stream Management in preparing proposals by providing technical expertise. Provide technical guidance to produce innovative, high-level engineering work on feasibility, FEED, detailed design, consultancy and EPC projects. Understand standard contract requirements and scope, including Cost Reimbursable and Lump Sum Turn Key contract approaches. Familiarity with procurement, including bid evaluation and vendor review process. Undertake visits to site, company and client offices to facilitate design work and resolve project problems. Mentor and develop less experienced engineers.
Knowledge / Experience (Skills):
- Must possess a broad technical background in pipeline design for some or all the following: onshore and offshore pipelines/platforms, crude oil tank farms, process plants, refineries, FPSO, etc. Including experience in working in multi-disciplinary projects and teams.
- Extensive experience of relevant National and International Standards and Codes of Practice.
- Exposure to the EPC sector of oil and gas industry including construction / site experience.
- Demonstrable ability to deliver efficient analytical solutions to engineering design tasks.
- Good computer literacy with Pipeline design software, MS Excel, Access, Word, Outlook, Windows and the Internet.
- Ability to work independently and effectively under pressure – working to deadlines and be able to prioritise workload.
- Ability to communicate effectively with senior management and clients, as required.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrating ability to manage and provide technical guidance to engineers.
- Discretion and confidentiality at all times.
- Flexibility to work within a team environment.
Qualifications:
- An engineering degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
- An M.Sc. in pipeline engineering would be advantageous.
- Chartered membership of an appropriate institution is desirable.
