Were working with a leading defence client to find an experienced Environmental Engineer for a contract role based primarily in Bristol, with a flexible hybrid working arrangement (three days onsite in Bristol and one in Merthyr Tydfil each week). About the role In this position, you will provide vital environmental engineering support across the Ajax programme, ensuring that environmental management systems and legislative requirements are effectively implemented. Youll lead assurance activities, manage environmental risks, and support critical air quality and toxicity testing efforts. In doing so, you'll produce and review environmental documentation, maintain governance arrangements, and offer expert advice to project leadership.
Key responsibilities include: Developing and maintaining Ajax's environmental management and governance frameworks
Leading environmental compliance and assurance activities
Managing environmental risks, impacts, and hazardous materials
Supporting air quality, toxicity, and human-in-the-loop testing
Producing and endorsing Environmental Cases and related deliverables
Providing environmental guidance to project teams and leadership
Managing relationships with contractors and suppliers regarding environmental requirements
Building environmental capability within the Ajax team to ensure sustainability and resilience
Ideal Candidate Profile Were looking for someone with:
A minimum Level 4 NQF qualification in a relevant engineering or science discipline
Extensive experience in environmental management and protection best practices, especially within complex programmes
Strong knowledge of environmental legislation, risk assessment, impact management, and environmental management tools such as ASEMS, POEMS, SEMS, or AEMS
Chartered or Incorporated Engineer/Scientist status (or equivalent) and membership of a recognised professional institution
Proven experience advising on environmental compliance, supporting governance frameworks, and managing contractual relationships
SC Security Clearance
Desirable Skills Experience working within a defence programme or managing environmental activities within a Major Programme (GMPP/CAT A) would be advantageous.
Demonstrated leadership, stakeholder engagement, and analytical decision-making skills will support your success in this role.
Contract Details Location: Bristol, with hybrid working (3 days onsite in Bristol, 1 in Merthyr Tydfil)
Start: ASAP
Duration: Until 31st March 2027, with scope to extend
Day rate: Up to Β£570 per day (inside IR35, ex VAT)
Security clearance: SC minimum
