We are recruiting confidentially for an experienced and compassionate Maths Teacher to join a specialist education setting in Birkenhead, working with KS3 and KS4 students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity for a teacher who enjoys working with smaller groups of young people and wants to make a genuine difference to students who may have experienced barriers to learning within mainstream education.
You will be responsible for delivering engaging and differentiated Maths lessons, adapting your approach to meet a range of academic, behavioural and emotional needs. Alongside academic progress, you will play an important role in helping students develop confidence, resilience and positive attitudes towards education.
Key Responsibilities

- Set appropriate expectations based on students' individual starting points and previous attainment.
- Work collaboratively with the SENCo, teaching assistants and wider school team to support individual students.
- Contribute to students' wider pastoral, social and emotional development.
- Maintain strong subject knowledge and engage with relevant curriculum developments.
- Build positive relationships with students, parents, carers and external professionals where appropriate.
- Take an active role in the wider school community and contribute to ongoing school development.
- Engage in continued professional development to strengthen teaching practice.
Required Skills & Experience
- A degree in Mathematics or a related subject, with PGCE or equivalent teaching qualification.
- Ideally at least two years' experience teaching Maths, particularly at KS3 and KS4.
- Strong knowledge of the Maths curriculum.
- Ability to differentiate teaching effectively for students with varying academic abilities and additional needs.
- A genuine interest in working with young people with SEN and SEMH needs.
- Strong behaviour-management skills and the confidence to support students who may present with challenging behaviour.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- A patient, empathetic and solutions-focused approach.
- Previous experience within SEN, SEMH or alternative provision would be advantageous but is not essential.
What We Offer
- The opportunity to work with smaller groups of students and make a meaningful impact on their education.
- A supportive specialist education environment.
- Ongoing professional development and opportunities to develop your knowledge of SEN and SEMH education.
- A collaborative team committed to improving outcomes for young people.
- The opportunity to work creatively and adapt teaching to individual students rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
The organisation is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All staff are expected to share this commitment, and the successful applicant will be subject to a fully enhanced DBS check and relevant pre-employment checks.
As part of the safer recruitment process, an online search will be conducted for shortlisted candidates in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026 guidance.
