The Nurse Technologist plays a pivotal role in supporting simulated learning, open-access labs, and dispensary functions within the School of Health & Life Sciences.
This position is integral to demonstrating, supervising, and facilitating practical skills for students enrolled in health sciences programs.
The Nurse Technologist is responsible for managing lab operations, providing remediation to students as needed, and preparing students to demonstrate essential skills within a professional practice environment before clinical application.
Successful candidates will be required to conduct work on-site at Conestoga’s Centre of Excellence in Healthcare Education, located at 433 Steeles Avenue in Milton and the Village of Ridgeview Court at 545 Dymott Avenue.
The Technologist will be scheduled four days per week, 8:00 a. m. to 2:30 p. m., up to 24 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
Travel is required occasionally to other campus locations.
Responsibilities
- Operates mannequin physiology and voices mannequins for scenarios in the Cross Centre for Simulation Learning
- Acts as an allied health professional or family member in simulation events
- Troubleshoots scenario issues, including audio, visual or connectivity problems, with the Simulation Specialist
- Ensures scenario fidelity with appropriate moulage, props, and mannequins
- Assists with the setup and teardown of simulation suites and debrief rooms
- Facilitates student learning of practical skills for health sciences programs through Open Access Learning activities
- Organizes and delivers skills demonstrations based on health sciences program criteria
- Modifies experiential learning activities to assess students’ practice capability and decision-making
- Records equipment, supplies usage data, and other data
- Models professional practice and assesses skills for individuals or groups of students
- Provides remedial skill assistance to students for skill development as needed
- Uses a web-based booking system to support student appointments
- Documents observations and informs faculty regarding students’ ability to meet standards, using pre-determined assessment tools
- Maintains the cleanliness and order of the lab environment
- Assists in the management of equipment and consumable supplies for daily clinical activities
- Responds to faculty communications related to supply and equipment issues in clinical labs
- Prepares and assembles equipment on supply carts for upcoming events
- Restocks supply carts and care desk cupboards with consumable supplies
- Cleans and maintains returned equipment, including laundering soiled linens and towels
- Identifies and completes necessary equipment repairs within capabilities
- Orders, processes, receives, and catalogues instructional and consumable supplies
- Inputs inventory data and maintains accounting documentation by reviewing invoices to ensure receipt of ordered items
- Accepts, sorts, and processes donations
- Obtains vendor quotes and seeks appropriate approvals for supply requests using the College’s financial accounting software
- Provides orientation to faculty, staff, and learners as needed
Qualifications
- A four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing is required
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) in the province of Ontario, entitled to practice with no restrictions, is required
- Minimum five years of acute care clinical experience in a healthcare agency is required
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with faculty and students
- High-level organizational skills
- Assertive and self-motivated, to develop and maintain the lab as a relevant dynamic learning resource
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- Ability to creatively develop methods of enhancing the facilitation of learning
- Access to reliable transportation and the ability to travel to multiple campus locations is required
