Position Summary
Full-Time Administration Contract, new position (Immediate need – March 30, 2027). The Intellectual Property (IP) Specialist supports ongoing collaboration with Durham College and Sheridan College to provide intellectual property support to their startups, small- and medium-sized enterprises, researchers, and students. This collaboration will continue to cement Conestoga's role as an IP hub, supporting the protection and commercialization of innovation across Ontario's applied research institutes and businesses. Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with one day on-site at Conestoga’s Research Office located at 96 Grand Ave. S. in Cambridge, and four days remote.
- IP and commercialization services
- Act as the key point of contact for small- and medium-sized enterprises or entrepreneur clients accessing services through the Centre of Commercialization for Sheridan College and Durham College.
- Work with applied research and technical leaders at the respective colleges to develop and maintain a menu of technical services.
- Provide IP consultations and perform comprehensive analyses of the IP landscape to identify existing patents, trademarks, and copyrights that may impact the client's innovations.
- Use databases and tools to search for relevant IP documents and assess their relevance.
- Liaise with Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON) for the purpose of providing referrals and developing a deep understanding of IPON services and supports.
- Coordinate and collaborate with colleges to deliver workshops and IP education events.
- Project Management
- Liaise with Applied Research Centre Leads to plan and resource technical service and commercialization projects.
- Responsible for providing project management oversight for the initiation, execution, and successful completion of commercialization projects in the Centre.
- Ensure project deliverables are met in accordance with partner expectations, funder guidelines, and college policies.
- Enter and maintain accurate and complete information to support tracking of key metrics by maintaining ongoing relationships with clients to enable post-project data collection.
- Knowledge Dissemination
- Support the dissemination of knowledge through seminars, workshops, publications, and conference presentations.
- In collaboration with the Office of Research Services and the Associate Director, develop content for the website, social media, and marketing collaterals to promote the activities of the Centre with our partners and IPON.
Qualifications
- A master’s degree in engineering, science, or a related field is required.
- A minimum of five years of experience in leveraging IP assets to support business objectives and commercialization.
- Solid understanding of Intellectual Property and IP Strategy.
- Proficiency in IP laws and regulations.
- Strong analytical and research skills.
- Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Experience using Patsnap software is preferred.
