The Role
House & Garden is looking for a Senior Copy Editor to play a key role in the running of its subs desk across the magazine and its supplements. Reporting to the Chief Sub Editor, this is an exciting opportunity for an experienced production journalist with outstanding editorial judgement, excellent organisational skills and a passion for maintaining the highest editorial standards. The successful candidate will support the Chief Sub Editor in overseeing day-to-day editorial production, helping to manage workflow, maintain schedules and ensure all content is delivered accurately, consistently and on time. They will work closely with editorial, art, picture and production teams, while acting as a senior member of the subs team and deputising for the Chief Sub Editor when required. A meticulous eye for detail, strong communication skills and a deep enthusiasm for House & Garden are essential.
What You'll Be Doing
- Supporting the Chief Sub Editor in the day-to-day management of the subs desk across the magazine and its supplements.
- Helping to coordinate editorial workflow, ensuring copy moves smoothly through the production process and deadlines are consistently met.
- Acting as deputy to the Chief Sub Editor, overseeing production schedules and editorial output in their absence.
- Assisting with the allocation and prioritisation of work across the subs team.
- Working closely with editorial, art, picture and production departments to ensure efficient communication and collaboration throughout the production cycle.
- Sub-editing, proofreading and fact-checking editorial content with exceptional accuracy and sensitivity to House & Garden's tone and style.
- Writing and refining headlines, standfirsts, sells, captions and other display copy in House & Garden's distinctive voice.
- Maintaining consistency of house style across all editorial output and supporting the ongoing development of style guidelines.
- Reviewing layouts and page proofs, ensuring pages are accurate, balanced and production-ready.
- Supporting the Chief Sub Editor with workflow improvements and the implementation of new editorial processes where appropriate.
- Carrying out final checks on pages prior to sign-off, ensuring the highest standards of quality and accuracy.
About You
- Significant experience in a sub-editing role within a magazine, newspaper or digital editorial environment.
- Exceptional command of English grammar, spelling and style, with a sharp editorial instinct and meticulous attention to detail.
- Strong fact-checking skills and sound editorial judgement.
- Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
- Confident working independently and making decisions in a fast-paced production environment.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience working across editorial, design and production teams.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign and InCopy.
- A flair for writing compelling headlines, standfirsts, captions and page furniture.
- A proactive and solutions-focused approach, with an interest in improving workflows and production processes.
- A passion for House & Garden and its areas of coverage, including interiors, decoration, architecture, gardens, travel, food, art and culture.
