The Role
The UK Photo Editor reports to the WIRED Director of Photography and serves as the first shift for daily news coverage in the WIRED UK newsroom. In this role, they provide day-to-day photo and visual solutions that support the editorial team while upholding the brand's visual standards. The UK Photo Editor handles breaking news and "ASAP" art requests during the GMT/BST workday, and collaborates with editors and writers across time zones to develop original editorial photography. They oversee shoots from start to finish, including talent selection, production, editing, and post-production. This position also leads photography for UK and European events and promotions, and plays an integral role in shaping the creative direction and use of photography across all WIRED platforms.
- Execute photo research for wired.com:
- Cover ASAP art requests during the GMT and BST time zone workday
- Act as first point of news coverage for wired.com in the London workday
- Research and edit photographs for two daily sections on wired.com
About you:
- Experience in photography, media or relevant fields.
- Experienced photo editor with a strong portfolio of work across digital and print editorial photography.
- Experience commissioning and producing complex photoshoots to exacting requirements under tight time constraints and within budget.
- Photoshop proficiency and a talented eye in creating photography, graphics, collages and other artistic treatments.
- Experience with web production and working within editorial content management systems.
- Ability to work in a fast paced news environment: Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously and pivoting quickly.
- An extensive database of photographers, with a track record of finding and recruiting emerging talent, particularly from underrepresented groups.
- Thorough knowledge of artist rights, image copyright law, image licensing, and photographer rights.
- Experience with writing, a plus.
- Knowledge of digital, social content, and larger trends across internet culture.
- Highly organised, detail oriented, and excellent communication skills.
- BA or BFA in photography, studio art, or a related field preferred.
