The Role
Reporting to the Thermal/Mechanical engineering manager, this role requires someone who has a ‘hands-on’ approach to Thermal and Mechanical engineering. Working closely with the wider engineering functions, you and your team will play a crucial role in the design process from concept to production.
What will I be delivering?
The Thermal/Mechanical team at Concurrent are responsible for delivering the cooling solution and the mechanical solution for conduction cooled/air cooled boards as well as system products. The team is also responsible for qualifying the products under harsh thermal/mechanical and environmental requirements.
Key responsibilities:
- The thermal and mechanical design of electronics to be used in harsh environments, including systems and board level designs.
- Report progress and technical issues to the leadership and project management.
- Provide support with the Design and Test function by means of designing new jigs and fixtures for design verification and production test purposes.
- Implement and/or improve technical tools, processes, team skills/knowledge increasing team efficiency and effectiveness.
- Provide technical input, support, decision making within the team as necessary ensuring project deliverables are achieved.
- Perform thermal simulations and analysis to validate design modifications and ensure optimal thermal performance.
- Conduct experimental testing and verification of prototypes to assess thermal and mechanical performance and compliance with design specifications.
- Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams to integrate thermal solutions into overall product designs.
- Create detailed engineering documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and reports.
- Identify suitable materials and apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles in thermal design.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant industry standards and regulations.

What do I need to bring with me?
Demonstrated knowledge and experience:
- Proficient in general mechanical design principles, 3D designs, parts and assemblies (preferably SolidWorks) and document control.
- Proven knowledge of 2D drawing creation, geometrical tolerancing and stack analysis.
- Good grasp of material properties, metalwork manufacture and surface finishing.
- Good understanding of heat transfer principles and thermal solutions in electronic products.
- Previous experience in working with interdisciplinary project teams.
- Good communication and listening skills to work effectively as a team.
- An ability to solve potentially complex mechanical/thermal problems, with the ability to reason independently and reach achievable engineering solutions.
- Good understanding of electronics cooling.
- Experience in working to mechanical and environmental standards.
- Ability to use 3D Cad software for mechanical design (preferably SolidWorks).
- Track record of managing and mitigating risks on projects.
Desirable:
- Understanding of mechanical design for high vibration environments.
- Understanding of Military and Aerospace qualification testing.
- Capable of FEA frequency analysis for vibration.
- Experience in developing and improving engineering processes.
- Experience in managing projects to deliver on time and to budget.
- Experience of working with suppliers and customers.
