Minimum Requirements

  • Experience of examining legal documents to ensure accuracy of claims.
  • Experience of delivering complex legal issues before judges or magistrates.
  • Experience of managing external advisors (e.g., technical, legal).
  • Basic knowledge of law relating to Public Health and Housing, especially regarding disrepair and amenities.
  • Experience in all aspects of the Housing Acts.
  • Experience working in an in-house local government Legal Service or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Law degree or a degree with Common Professional Examination.
  • Qualified Solicitor with a recognised law degree and LLM.
  • Working knowledge of housing legislation.
  • Understanding of the repairing obligations of the council and tenant responsibilities.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Law degree, CILEX, or equivalent legal qualification.
  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives with relevant post-qualification experience.
  • Current practicing certificate with evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Extensive knowledge of the relevant area of law and its application within a local authority context.
  • Knowledge of strategic and operational management practices.
  • Understanding of issues facing local government and the ability to address them.
  • Knowledge of practice and procedure in courts, tribunals, and inquiries.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide clear advice verbally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in drafting complex legal documentation and handling complex matters.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring less experienced staff.
  • Proven experience managing a varied legal caseload at a senior level.
  • Experience managing staff and ensuring performance within legislative timescales.
