What we do

Compton Care provides high quality, accessible care and support for the people in our communities living with life limiting conditions across Wolverhampton, the Black Country, South Staffordshire and East Shropshire.

The charity’s annual running costs are £16 million, with 70% funded through our stores, fundraising, and donations from amazing supporters.

This is an exciting opportunity to take on a brand-new leadership role within Compton Care Retail.

We're looking for an experienced, commercially minded retail leader to become our General Store Manager at St George's, one of the largest operations within our retail portfolio. This is far more than a traditional store management role. You'll oversee both our busy retail store and centralised stock processing facility, leading managers, driving performance and helping shape the future of retail at Compton Care.

Working alongside a passionate team of staff and volunteers, you'll play a key role in generating the income that helps fund vital care and support for people living with life-limiting conditions across our communities.

What you'll be doing:

  • Lead and inspire one of Compton Care's largest retail operations.
  • Manage and support the Store Manager and Stock Processing Manager.
  • Drive sales, profitability, productivity and operational performance across the site.
  • Analyse performance data and implement improvement plans to maximise results.
  • Oversee the end-to-end stock journey, from donation through to sale.
  • Ensure excellent customer service and outstanding store standards.
  • Lead, motivate and develop a large team of paid staff and volunteers.
  • Manage budgets, resources and operational costs effectively.
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety, retail standards and organisational policies.
  • Support retail growth initiatives and continuous improvement projects.
  • Act as an ambassador for Compton Care within the local community.

What we're looking for:

  • Significant experience managing a large retail operation.
  • Proven success delivering sales, income and profit targets.
  • Experience leading managers and multi-layered teams.
  • Strong commercial awareness and performance management skills.
  • Excellent leadership, coaching and people development abilities.
  • Strong organisational, planning and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to analyse data and translate insight into action.
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety requirements.
  • Confident IT skills, including Microsoft Office.

A positive, proactive and resilient approach in a fast-paced environment

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • 22 days annual leave (plus bank holidays), increasing with long service.
  • Salary exchange pension scheme with a 5% employer contribution from day one, increasing to 7% after 3 years.
  • Death in service benefit (2x salary).
  • Staff discount across our coffee shops and other benefits.
  • Access to the employee assistance program, including unlimited telephone counselling and 24/7 GP access.
  • Blue Light Card discounts.
  • Opportunities for career development through our in-house management training program.
