To lead the design and development of innovative, compliant technical solutions that meet the demanding requirements of customer specifications. Responsible for the entire design process; from engaging with the customer to define clear, robust requirements through to design verification ensuring designs meet the highest standards for safety, quality, functionality and cost-effectiveness. As a technical expert, play a key role in maintaining engineering excellence, authorising production of design work, and supporting business decisions. Support business development activities, including sales and marketing. This role requires both technical expertise and commercial awareness, including managing design budgets, influencing clients, and contributing to the Engineering Teams success. Main Duties and Responsibilities: Lead the design, development, and testing of new components and systems from initial concept through to production. Revise and improve the design of existing products. Provide support to the manufacturing teams. Provide technical support to non-technical teams (e.g. Sales). Write technical specifications, create design standards, and capture lessons learned. Present and communicate technical information including 3D CAD models to internal and external customers. Manage project progress, time, budget, and risk through applying Reliance’s internal new product development and introduction process. Lead design reviews, risk assessments and continuous improvement initiatives. Be responsible for design checking activities. Support developing engineers in their careers, including mentoring and potentially IMechE activities. At least 5 years relevant experience working in a mechanical design engineering position. Direct experience of start-to-end New Product Introduction projects Experience of high-precision design and manufacturing. Experience of rotating machinery. Knowledge Understanding of all aspects of New Product Introduction precision engineering and manufacturing principles. Technical drawing to BS8888. Understanding of the role of mechanical simulation in design. Involute gearing, including design of small module spur, bevel and cross axis gears for positioning and actuation. Electro-mechanical actuation. Ultra-high vacuum and clean systems. Design of multi axis positioning systems for microscopy and scientific instrument applications. Awareness of software and electronics engineering. CE Marking. AS9100, ISO9001, ISO13485. PRINCE2 Qualifications Degree level qualification in an Engineering discipline. Master’s or PhD Degree level qualification in an Engineering discipline. Chartered Engineer. Skills 3D CAD Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) Assembly of precision mechanical systems. Mechanical system testing. SolidWorks SolidWorks PDM Project management Mechanical Simulation Software, e.g. Python.
